Chapter 10 - THE MAN I BURIED

The photograph was real.
Daniel had it authenticated twice.
My father had not died when I believed he did.
At least not immediately.
His reported heart attack occurred in March.
The photograph was taken in September.
“Why would he fake his death?”
Daniel found the answer inside Graham’s files.
My father had discovered Richard Mercer’s criminal network.
He knew Ethan was different from his father.
But he also knew Richard still controlled men inside Mercer Development.
So my father disappeared.
For eleven months, he collected evidence.
Vanessa helped him.
That was the part none of us expected.
“She worked for your father?” Ethan asked.
Graham nodded.
“Originally.”
My father had hired Vanessa because she knew Ethan and could access the Mercer network.
But somewhere along the way, she changed.
Money.
Resentment.
Obsession.
Maybe all three.
“She found the Bennett Trust,” Daniel said.
“And realized what Claire would inherit.”
I stared at the wedding photograph.
“Did my father hate Ethan?”
“No,” Daniel said.
“He distrusted power. Not Ethan specifically.”
Ethan gave a grim smile.
“Smart man.”
I looked at him.
Months earlier he would have become defensive.
Now he simply accepted it.
Then another document surfaced.
My father’s final statement.
This one was recorded on video.
Daniel played it.
My father appeared older than I remembered.
Tired.
Scared.
“Claire,” he said into the camera, “if you ever see this, something has gone badly wrong.”
My throat closed.
“If Ethan is beside you, I hope that means he became the man I believed he could become.”
Ethan looked away.
My father continued.
“If he has not, leave him.”
Silence filled the room.
“Money does not make a marriage safe. Love does not make disrespect acceptable. And a child should never be the reason a woman remains where she is diminished.”
Tears slid down my face.
Ethan didn’t touch me.
He didn’t presume he had the right.
My father then explained the trust.
The land.
The safeguards.
And Vanessa.
“She is intelligent,” he said. “But she carries anger like fuel.”
Then his expression changed.
“There is one person I trust completely.”
The video flickered.
A younger Daniel appeared briefly behind him.
Then another figure.
I leaned forward.
Michael.
Ethan’s supposedly dead brother.
Ethan stood.
“You knew my father-in-law?”
Michael’s face drained.
“Turn it off.”
Daniel paused the video.
Ethan stared at him.
“What did you do?”
Michael backed away.
“I was trying to help.”
“With what?”
“My father.”
“What about him?”
Michael looked at me.
Then at Ethan.
Finally he said the sentence he had hidden for nine years.
“Richard Mercer didn’t die from liver failure.”
Ethan went still.
Michael swallowed.
“He was murdered.”
“By who?”
May you like
Michael’s eyes filled with shame.
“By me.”
