Chapter 9 - THE HOME THEY COULDN'T TAKE

Six months later, Rachel stood inside a renovated community center.

The sign outside read:

THE REBECCA SLOAN FAMILY SAFETY FOUNDATION.

The first floor offered legal assistance.

The second offered financial counseling.

The third provided emergency housing for families escaping abusive relationships.

Rachel had funded it.

Rebecca ran it.

And I volunteered there every Saturday.

Eli had changed too.

He still loved superheroes.

Still carried his blue backpack everywhere.

But he no longer flinched when someone raised their voice.

That mattered more than any court victory.

Victor eventually accepted a plea agreement that sent him to prison for years.

Daniel testified against the network.

Harold went to trial.

The evidence was overwhelming.

When Rachel testified, Harold tried to intimidate her.

“You're destroying your own family.”

Rachel looked directly at him.

“You destroyed it when you decided money mattered more than people.”

The jury convicted him.

His fortune was seized.

Millions were returned to victims.

Rachel kept only what she needed.

The rest went into the foundation.

One afternoon, she received a letter.

It was from a woman whose account Victor had emptied.

The woman wrote:

I thought losing my money meant losing my life. Your foundation helped me start over. My children have a home tonight because you chose to help strangers.

Rachel cried when she read it.

Rebecca placed a hand on her shoulder.

“You know what Mom would have wanted.”

Rachel smiled.

“She would have wanted us to stop being afraid.”

Outside, Eli was playing soccer.

He kicked the ball toward Rachel.

“Mom!”

She laughed.

“Coming!”

Then she noticed something in the mailbox.

A letter.

No return address.

Her smile faded.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Harold.

Taken recently.

Behind him stood a man Rachel had never seen before.

On the back was one sentence:

THE BROKER WAS NEVER HAROLD.

Rachel stared.

Rebecca read it over her shoulder.

Neither woman spoke.

Then Rebecca turned the photograph over again.

A second line had been written beneath the first.

YOU STILL HAVE ONE FAMILY SECRET LEFT.

Rachel's heart pounded.

After everything they had survived, there was still someone out there.

May you like

Someone who knew their history.

Someone who had been waiting.
