Chapter 7 - WHAT WAS UNDER THE FLOOR

Police surrounded Rachel's house before dawn.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Eli’s toys were still scattered across the living room.

The kitchen clock still showed 6:18.

Then Rebecca noticed something.

The fireplace.

She knelt beside it.

“There.”

A faint scratch marked the wooden floor.

The detective removed the board.

Beneath it was a metal compartment.

Inside was a small black box.

Rachel stared.

“I've never seen that.”

Rebecca opened it.

Inside were passports.

Photographs.

A stack of property deeds.

And one handwritten journal.

The first page carried Harold Mercer's name.

Rachel began reading.

The entries revealed everything.

Harold had orchestrated the financial scheme.

Victor had married Rachel because of her trust.

Daniel had provided confidential banking data.

But the final pages contained something far more disturbing.

Harold had discovered that Rebecca was investigating him.

He ordered Victor to make her disappear.

Victor attacked her.

Believing she was dead, he buried her identity.

But Rebecca survived.

Then came the final entry.

Rachel must never learn who her real father was.

Rachel stopped.

“My father?”

She turned the page.

Her father's name appeared.

Then another name.

Harold Mercer.

Rachel staggered backward.

“He was my father?”

Rebecca nodded.

“He had an affair with your mother.”

Rachel stared at the journal.

The entire family history had been built on a lie.

Harold had spent years controlling Rachel because he believed she was his property.

But the final document changed everything.

Rachel wasn't his beneficiary.

She was his heir.

The twelve-million-dollar trust was not the only asset.

Harold's entire private fortune legally belonged to Rachel.

The detective looked at her.

“If this is authentic, everything he built can be frozen.”

Rachel whispered:

“He destroyed so many people.”

“Yes.”

“Then I want it all returned.”

She closed the box.

“To the families.”

At that moment, Eli ran toward the window.

“Mommy!”

Everyone turned.

A black SUV had stopped outside.

Harold stepped out.

He looked directly at the house.

Then he smiled.

And beside him stood Victor’s attorney.

The detective reached for his weapon.

Harold raised one hand.

He wasn't holding a gun.

He was holding a photograph.

It showed Eli standing alone outside the bank.

And written on the back were four words:

COME OUT OR HE PAYS.
