Chapter 6 - THE MAN BEHIND THE BROKER

Daniel refused to speak during interrogation.
But Rebecca already knew what he meant.
“There was always someone above him.”
She opened her flash drive.
A folder appeared.
Inside were photographs of private meetings.
Victor.
Daniel.
Several attorneys.
And one older man whose face made the detective go silent.
“Who is that?”
Rebecca answered.
“Harold Mercer.”
The bank's founder.
He had died three years earlier.
Or so everyone believed.
The detective stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“His death certificate was fake.”
Rachel looked horrified.
“Why?”
“Because Harold built the network.”
Victor and Daniel were only pieces.
Harold had used the bank to identify vulnerable families and wealthy clients.
He created shell companies.
He manipulated debts.
He arranged fake emergencies.
Then he took control of assets.
But there was one thing Harold couldn't obtain.
A master trust established by Rachel's parents.
The trust was worth nearly twelve million dollars.
Rachel had inherited it after her father died.
Victor had spent years trying to force her into transferring it.
The detective looked at Eli.
“And the child?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Eli is the legal beneficiary.”
Rachel finally understood.
Victor didn't want custody because he loved his stepson.
He wanted control of Eli's inheritance.
A knock sounded at the interrogation-room door.
A young officer entered.
“We found Harold Mercer.”
Everyone froze.
“Where?”
The officer handed the detective a photograph.
Harold was alive.
Living under another name.
And he had just boarded a private flight out of the country.
Rachel whispered:
“He's running.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the photograph.
“He's going home.”
The detective frowned.
“Where?”
Rebecca looked at Rachel.
“Your house.”
Rachel's face went white.
The house where she had lived for years.
The house Victor controlled.
The house where Eli slept.
If Harold was going there, he wasn't running.

He was going for the final piece of evidence.
And whatever he wanted was still hidden inside Rachel's home.
