Chapter 7 - The Daughter in My House

Emily had worked for me for four years.

She managed my calendar, arranged meetings, and knew which calls I took personally. She was twenty-six, quiet, dependable, and almost invisible when she wanted to be.

According to the adoption file, she had been born under a different name.

The daughter of Celeste Rowan and Nicholas Whitaker.

I summoned her to my office.

She arrived carrying a folder and stopped when she saw the documents on my desk.

“What's wrong?” she asked.

I slid the birth record toward her.

“Do you know this name?”

She stared at it.

Then she sat down slowly.

“My adoptive parents told me I was adopted when I was twelve. They said my biological mother was young and unable to raise me.”

“Did they tell you who your father was?”

“No.”

“His name was Nicholas Whitaker.”

Emily's face went white.

“My brother,” I continued, “was your biological father.”

She covered her mouth.

For several moments, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, “Why would my mother work so hard to find me only to pretend I never existed?”

“Your mother?”

“Celeste contacted me six months ago. She said she wanted to help me learn about my birth family. She offered me a job here.”

My blood turned cold.

“You knew who she was?”

“I knew she was my biological mother. I didn't know Nicholas was my father until today.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she threatened to ruin my adoptive parents if I revealed anything. She said she had evidence they falsified my adoption papers.”

Emily reached into her bag and removed a small silver locket.

“My adoptive mother gave me this before she died. She said it came from my birth father.”

I opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Nicholas holding a baby.

On the back, he had written two words.

My daughter.

Emily began to cry.

I had spent years believing I had failed my brother. Now I was looking at the family he had left behind, scattered across my life like pieces of a broken mirror.

Before I could say anything, Marcus entered.

“Boss, we have a problem.”

He handed me a photograph from the estate's security cameras.

Celeste was standing outside Emily's apartment.

Beside her was Victor Sloane.

And in Victor's hand was a pistol.
