Chapter 14 - The Last Person I Expected

I confronted Celeste in the presence of her attorney and federal investigators.

She looked older than she had a week earlier. The polished confidence was gone, replaced by exhaustion and fear.

“Nicholas wrote that you gave the order,” I said.

She closed her eyes.

“I didn't order his death.”

“Then explain your name.”

She looked at the investigators before answering.

“Victor told me Nicholas was planning to expose my father. He said the organization would destroy my family if Nicholas spoke. I agreed to arrange the meeting because I thought we could force him to leave.”

“And the gunmen?”

“I didn't know about them.”

“Did you know he was going to die?”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate, but grief filled her face.

“I loved Nicholas once. I was young, frightened, and controlled by people who knew exactly how to use that fear. I made choices that hurt him. I hid Emily. I threatened Hannah. I won't pretend I was innocent.”

“Then why threaten my family?”

“Because Victor said he would kill Emily if I didn't help him secure the trust.”

The investigators asked for evidence.

Celeste produced a second phone containing messages from Victor, including a photograph of Emily's adoptive parents and instructions to keep the young woman under surveillance.

There were also messages discussing the night Nicholas died.

One contained a voice recording.

Victor's voice was clear.

“Celeste, your job is to bring him to the warehouse. I'll handle the rest.”

She had obeyed.

The evidence was enough to charge Victor with conspiracy and multiple violent crimes. Celeste was also charged for her role in the threats and fraud.

She looked at me one final time.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don't have time to hate you.”

I walked away.

Over the following weeks, the investigation widened. Several corrupt officials were arrested, stolen assets were recovered, and the criminal network began to collapse.

I surrendered control of the operations that had kept the organization alive. Some men threatened me. Others walked away. A few chose to cooperate with investigators.

For the first time, I was building a future without depending on fear.

Then Margaret called with the result of a final forensic examination.

The bullet recovered from the old warehouse had never matched any weapon registered to Victor's men.

It matched a gun that had belonged to my father.

And the weapon had not been fired by him.

The fingerprint evidence identified the person who had pulled the trigger.

It belonged to someone who was still alive.

Someone who had been at Nicholas's funeral.

May you like

Someone who had stood beside me for years.

Marcus Reed.
