Chapter 12 - The Detective's Double Life

I stared at Ortiz's name.

For months, I had trusted him with evidence that could destroy my empire. Now I wondered whether he had been helping me expose the truth or guiding me toward a trap.

I didn't confront him immediately.

Instead, I gave the list to Margaret and asked her to verify every payment. By dawn, she confirmed that several transfers had gone through an account linked to Ortiz's former partner.

The detective had not received the money directly.

Someone had used his name to conceal the real beneficiary.

That didn't clear him, but it meant the list could not be taken at face value.

I arranged a meeting at the federal building, where investigators could question him under supervision.

Ortiz arrived looking exhausted.

When I showed him the list, he went pale.

“That's my old partner, Michael Vance,” he said. “He disappeared eight years ago after an internal corruption investigation.”

“Why is your name here?”

“Because Vance used my credentials to access sealed records. I reported him, but the case was buried.”

He handed me a copy of his original complaint.

The signature at the bottom belonged to the federal prosecutor who had dismissed it.

The same prosecutor had approved the warrant that allowed Victor to seize several of my company's assets.

This conspiracy reached further than any of us had imagined.

Ortiz agreed to cooperate with a federal task force investigating the network. He also made one thing clear.

“Grant, if you want to protect Hannah and those girls, you need to dismantle the criminal operation. The money, the routes, the political favors. All of it.”

I had spent my life believing I could control the darkness as long as I stood at the center of it.

Now I understood that the darkness had been controlling me.

I agreed to provide the evidence and surrender the assets tied to the criminal network.

That afternoon, Hannah brought Lily home from the hospital.

I arranged a safe apartment with proper heating, medical support, and round-the-clock protection. Hannah insisted on paying what she could, but I told her the arrangement was temporary until she could choose where she wanted to live.

She looked at me carefully.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because Nicholas would have wanted me to.”

She lowered her eyes.

“And because you don't want to lose another family member.”

I had no answer.

That evening, Emily joined us for dinner. Lily shyly offered her a crayon drawing of two girls holding hands beneath a yellow sun.

Emily began to cry.

For a brief moment, the world felt almost normal.

Then the doorbell rang.

A courier delivered a sealed envelope addressed to me.

Inside was a photograph of Lily outside her new apartment.
