Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH AT THE ALTAR

The battle ended before sunrise.
The Hale estate was surrounded.
Dozens of Nightglass operatives were arrested.
Nathaniel Hale was captured inside the underground command center.
Julian was found hiding beneath a false floor.
Victoria surrendered after learning her father had been arrested.
But Clara couldn't stop thinking about one thing.
Her mother.
The search continued for hours.
Then, at 6:17 a.m., a helicopter landed on the estate lawn.
A woman stepped out.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Walking with a cane.
Clara saw her.
And stopped breathing.
Arthur turned.
His knees almost gave out.
“Elena.”
The woman looked at him.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Arthur walked toward her.
Elena dropped her cane.
They embraced.
Clara began crying.
Her mother was alive.
Thirty years of grief collapsed in a single moment.
Elena held her daughter.
“My baby.”
Clara sobbed.
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
Elena looked at Arthur.
“Because someone inside the government was watching every move we made.”
Then she revealed the final piece.
She had survived the assassination attempt.
She had spent decades building a counterintelligence operation inside Nightglass.
She had allowed Nathaniel to believe she was dead.
She had even watched Clara grow from a distance.
Every birthday.
Every graduation.
Every heartbreak.
But there was one thing she couldn't forgive herself for.
“I watched you meet Julian.”
Clara looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you stop me?”
“Because I needed him to lead us to the network.”
Clara's face fell.
“So I was bait too.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
“You used my life.”
“I tried to save it.”
Arthur stepped between them.
“That was my fault.”
Elena looked at him.
“I should have told her.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
For the first time in thirty years, the two former operatives stood together.
Not as soldiers.
Not as spies.
As parents.
Then Clara asked the question that mattered.
“What happens to Julian?”
The commander handed her a file.
Julian had confessed.
He admitted the marriage was an operation.
He admitted his family had monitored Clara for years.
But one final detail stunned her.
Julian had secretly protected her twice.
He had sabotaged two attempts to kidnap her.
“Why?”
Clara asked.
The commander answered:
“Because somewhere along the way, he actually fell in love with you.”
Clara closed her eyes.
The most dangerous man in her life had been both her enemy...
and the only person inside Nightglass who had tried to protect her.
But there was one final revelation.
Julian hadn't betrayed Nightglass voluntarily.
He had been threatened.
With Clara's life.

And the person who gave that order...
was still free.
