Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY THAT SURVIVED THE NIGHT

Three months later, Clara stood outside a federal courthouse.

The Hale family had been indicted.

Nightglass had been dismantled.

The Founder List had been released to federal prosecutors.

Dozens of powerful people resigned.

Several were arrested.

Others disappeared before warrants could be issued.

The country finally learned that one of the largest covert corruption networks in modern American history had operated in the shadows for decades.

But Clara's story was different.

She wasn't interested in politics anymore.

She wanted her family back.

Arthur had returned to the small house where he had raised her.

He still kept his old gardening tools.

Still drove the rattling pickup.

Still woke before sunrise.

Only now, military vehicles occasionally appeared outside his home.

Elena moved back in.

For the first time since Clara was nine, the family ate breakfast together.

It wasn't perfect.

There were arguments.

There were tears.

There were questions nobody wanted to answer.

But they were together.

One afternoon, Clara received a letter.

From Julian.

He had pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction.

He was facing years in federal prison.

The letter contained no excuses.

Only one sentence.

I loved you too late to deserve you.

Clara folded the letter.

She didn't forgive him.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But she understood something.

People weren't always heroes or villains.

Sometimes they were both.

Sometimes love arrived wrapped in betrayal.

And sometimes the person who broke your heart was also the person who had been trying, desperately and secretly, to keep you alive.

That evening, Arthur found Clara sitting in the garden.

“You okay?”

She smiled.

“I think so.”

He sat beside her.

For a while, they said nothing.

Then Clara noticed something beneath the old oak tree.

A small metal box.

Arthur hadn't seen it.

She dug it out.

Inside was another letter.

The handwriting belonged to Elena.

Clara opened it.

My dearest Clara,

If you are reading this, Nightglass is over.

But there is something I never told your father.

There was another child involved.

Clara's heart stopped.

She looked at Arthur.

“What child?”

Arthur frowned.

“I don't know.”

Clara kept reading.

Thirty years ago, Nathaniel Hale had a daughter.

She disappeared the same night I did.

She was nine years old.

And she knew everything.

Clara stared at the final line.

Her name was Victoria.

Clara's blood ran cold.

Victoria Hale had not been Nathaniel's wife.

She had been his daughter.

The entire family tree had been a lie.

And suddenly, every piece fell into place.

Julian hadn't married Clara because of his father's orders.

He had been ordered by his grandmother.

The woman who had spent thirty years pretending to be someone else.

The woman who had known Arthur's secret.

The woman who had helped create Nightglass.

The woman who had escaped.

Clara looked toward the horizon.

Her father's war was over.

But hers had just begun.

Because somewhere in America, another person was still carrying the Nightglass bloodline.

And this time...

they knew Clara was coming.

The story of the gardener was over.

The story of General Arthur Vance had ended.

May you like

But the story of Clara Vance...

had only just begun.
