Chapter 1 - THE MAN THEY THOUGHT WAS A GARDENER

The entire hall seemed to stop breathing.
Arthur Vance stood frozen beneath the wedding arch, tears still wet on his cheeks.
The Army commander remained directly in front of him, arm raised in a perfect salute.
Then something happened that made every person in the room gasp.
Arthur slowly returned the salute.
Not awkwardly.
Not like a civilian trying to imitate a soldier.
His posture changed completely.
His shoulders straightened.
His chin lifted.
The trembling hands that had spent decades planting flowers became steady.
For one terrifying second, the broken old gardener everyone had pitied disappeared.
In his place stood a man who looked as though he had once commanded entire rooms with a single glance.
Julian stared at him.
“What the hell is this?”
The commander lowered his hand.
“General.”
A whisper moved through the guests.
General?
Victoria's smile vanished.
“My husband was a general,” Arthur said quietly.
He looked at Clara.
“I was.”
The commander stepped closer.
“General Arthur Elias Vance. Former Director of Special Operations Task Group Seven. Decorated three times for valor. Presumed killed in action thirty years ago.”
Someone dropped a champagne glass.
It shattered across the floor.
Clara couldn't speak.
“Dad?”
Arthur looked at her.
“I wanted you to know me as your father,” he whispered. “Not as the man I used to be.”
Julian's face had turned pale.
“You're lying.”
The commander opened the titanium case.
Inside was a black folder stamped with a presidential seal.
“Your name is not listed on any public military database,” he said. “Because your disappearance was classified above Top Secret.”
Victoria suddenly stepped backward.
The commander noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“Victoria Hale.”
She froze.
“You know me?”
“No,” he answered.
“I know your father.”
Silence.
Victoria's lips parted.
Arthur's face hardened.
“Thirty years ago, your father ordered the execution of my entire team.”
Clara felt her stomach drop.
“What?”
Arthur didn't answer.
The commander did.
“Operation Nightglass.”
That name seemed to strike something inside Arthur.
He closed his eyes.
For thirty years, he had buried the past.
Now it had walked through the doors of his daughter's wedding.
And it had brought Julian with it.
The commander opened another document.
“General Vance, we found the financial trail.”
Arthur looked down.
The first page contained one name.
HALE INTERNATIONAL.
The second page contained another.
JULIAN HALE.
Julian's confidence finally disappeared.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
Arthur looked directly at him.
“You knew exactly who I was.”
Julian swallowed.
Clara stared at her fiancé.
“What does my father have to do with your family?”
Julian didn't answer.
That was when the commander said the words that destroyed everything Clara believed about her wedding.
“Miss Vance, Julian Hale did not marry you for love.”
Clara's heart stopped.
“He was assigned to you.”
A terrible silence followed.
And suddenly, Clara remembered something Julian had once said.
Something she had forgotten.
Something that had never made sense.
Three months after they met, Julian had asked her one strange question.
“What exactly did your father keep from you?”
At the time, she had laughed.
Now she realized he had never been joking.
He had been searching.
Searching for something Arthur had hidden.
