Chapter 14 - I WENT BACK TO THE BELLMONT HOTEL

Five years after I took the photographs, Thomas invited me to dinner.
I did not realize the restaurant was inside the Bellmont until the car stopped.
My stomach tightened.
Thomas noticed.
“What?”
I pointed upward.
He looked at the sign.
Then remembered.
“Oh.”
“I can’t believe you forgot.”
“I’m extremely attractive, not perfect.”
I laughed.
Then stopped.
“Do you want to leave?” he asked.
No disappointment.
No teasing.
No:
Don’t let the past win.
Just choice.
I looked through the revolving doors.
Five years earlier, Daniel and Melissa disappeared through them thinking nobody was watching.
I stood outside holding a phone and a marriage that had already been hollowed out by secrets I did not understand.
Now?
I wanted dinner.
“We stay.”
Inside, the lobby looked smaller than memory.
The restaurant was beautiful.
Not Northline.
That deal never happened.
A different operator had built something successful there.
We ate.
Talked.
No ghosts appeared.
Then Thomas asked:
“Do you regret sending the photos to Ryan?”
I thought.
“No.”
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Why?”
“Because if I had called Daniel first, he would’ve had time to control the story.”
That was the pattern I finally understood.
The first person to control information often controls blame.
I had spent years letting Daniel explain finances because he “understood the business.”
Melissa let Ryan manage money because he “understood investments.”
Daniel let Victor explain debt.
Ryan let Melissa explain her company.
Everybody outsourced understanding until secrets grew inside the gaps.
Thomas smiled.
“You read your own contracts now.”
“I read everybody’s.”
“Terrifying.”
Then he reached into his jacket.
My heart stopped.
“Thomas.”
He froze.
“What?”
“If that is a ring, do not propose to me in this hotel.”
His face became horrified.
Then he pulled out—
His glasses.
I laughed so loudly people turned.
“You thought—”
“Shut up.”
He was laughing too.
Three months later, he proposed in my kitchen.
No hotel.
No crowd.
No hidden camera.
He placed the ring on the table first.
Then said:
“Read the prenup before you answer.”
I loved him immediately for making the joke.
I had already said yes emotionally.
May you like
Legally?
I read everything.
