Chapter 1 - THE AFFAIR WASN’T THE SECRET THAT SCARED HIM

Three weeks before I photographed Daniel kissing Melissa outside the Bellmont Hotel, I discovered that $420,000 had disappeared from a company he did not own.
Mine.
When my mother died six years earlier, she left me a small commercial property in Brooklyn called the Harlow Building. Three floors. Twelve tenants. Nothing glamorous.
But it was mine before Daniel and I married, and it remained inside Harlow Property Group LLC, where I was the sole member.
Daniel helped with bookkeeping.
That was all.
At least, that was what I believed.
Three weeks earlier, one of my tenants accidentally copied me on an email intended for Daniel.
SUBJECT: NORTHLINE REPAYMENT SCHEDULE.
I almost deleted it.
Then I saw one sentence:
Please confirm whether Claire has approved extending the $420,000 intercompany advance another twelve months.
I stared at the screen.
What advance?
I called my accountant.
Two hours later, we found it.
Over eighteen months, money had moved from Harlow’s operating reserve into a company called Northline Hospitality Partners.
Daniel controlled Northline.
I had never approved the transfers.
Some were labeled construction advances.
Others management fees.
One simply said:
PROJECT RECOVERY.
My accountant asked:
“Did you authorize your husband to move money between these entities?”
“No.”
“Does he have signing access?”
“He handles routine expenses.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
Exactly.
I hired attorney Rebecca Sloan the next morning.
We froze Daniel’s transactional access, preserved account records, and began a forensic review.
I said nothing to Daniel.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted facts before accusations.
Then came the afternoon walk.
The Bellmont.
Melissa.
Five photographs.
Ryan’s message.
Daniel’s panicked call.
When I got home, Daniel’s car was already in the driveway.
He stood in the kitchen.
Tie crooked.
Face pale.
“Claire, we need to talk.”
“Yes.”
“Ryan went insane.”
“No. Ryan received photographs.”
Daniel stared.
Then:
“You had no right to involve him.”
I almost laughed.
“He’s Melissa’s husband.”
“This is between you and me.”
“No.”
I placed my phone on the counter.
“This became four people’s problem the moment you two made it four people’s marriage.”
He flinched.
Then I pulled out the folder Rebecca had prepared.
Daniel’s face changed.
He recognized Northline immediately.
“You went through my business?”
“I went through mine.”
Silence.
“Four hundred twenty thousand dollars.”
His lips parted.
Then closed.
The affair suddenly disappeared from his face.
That was how I knew I had found the secret that truly frightened him.
He whispered:
“Claire, you don’t understand what that money was for.”
I looked at him.
“Then explain.”
He sat down.
And said:
“Because if Northline collapses, we could lose the house.”
I stared at him.
May you like
Our house had never been part of Northline.
At least, I thought it hadn’t.
