Chapter 1 - THE CANCELLATION BUTTON:

The cancellation button turned red.

One tap.

That was all it took.

The reservation system refreshed.

The lakeside house disappeared from the family itinerary.

The boat reservation vanished.

The private chef canceled.

The weekend concert tickets were released.

The two SUVs reserved under my name were removed from the account.

The concierge service called me within thirty seconds.

“Ms. Bennett, would you like us to cancel the remaining arrangements?”

“Yes.”

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

There was a pause.

“Understood.”

I ended the call.

The backyard remained silent.

Nobody laughed anymore.

Tyler stared at me.

“Olivia.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You can't just cancel everything.”

“Why not?”

“Because my parents—”

“Your parents?”

I looked around the table.

“Your parents are perfectly capable of paying for their own weekend.”

Denise stood.

“You're being childish.”

“No.”

I looked at the wet emerald fabric clinging to my arms.

“I'm being finished.”

Tyler stepped toward me.

“We're not having this conversation here.”

“You started it here.”

“You embarrassed me.”

I almost laughed.

“You pushed me into a pool.”

“You were making a scene.”

“I asked for a chair.”

His brother muttered:

“She's acting crazy.”

I turned toward him.

“No.”

I pointed toward the phone in his hand.

“You recorded me being pushed into freezing water. That's not crazy. That's evidence.”

His smile disappeared.

I looked at Denise.

“You encouraged it.”

“I told Tyler to teach you some humility.”

I nodded slowly.

“Then you'll have a lot of time to think about humility tonight.”

I walked inside.

My hands were still shaking.

Not from anger.

From the cold.

I changed clothes in the downstairs bathroom.

Dried my hair.

Wrapped myself in a towel.

Then I sat on the closed toilet lid and opened my banking app.

The first thing I did was freeze Tyler's authorized card.

The second was remove Denise from the household emergency account.

The third was lock the family travel card.

The fourth was change every password.

And the fifth—

I opened my credit-monitoring dashboard.

There were three new inquiries.

Two mortgage applications.

One commercial loan.

I frowned.

I hadn't applied for anything.

I took screenshots.

Then I called my financial adviser.

“Mark?”

“Olivia?”

“I need you to check something.”

“What?”

“Credit inquiries.”

He pulled my file.

Silence.

“Mark?”

He finally spoke.

“There are six.”

“What?”

“Six inquiries over the last four months.”

“I only recognize one.”

“That one is from your employer.”

“What are the others?”

“Three are commercial lenders.”

“Commercial?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the screen.

“Why would anyone be applying for business financing under my identity?”

Mark didn't answer immediately.

Then:

“Olivia, I need you to ask Tyler whether he has used your Social Security number.”

My stomach dropped.

I hung up.

Then I checked the family email account.

There were messages from lenders.

I opened one.

Congratulations on your preliminary approval.

Applicant:

Olivia Bennett

Business:

Bennett Family Hospitality LLC

I had never heard of it.

My pulse started pounding.

I searched the company.

It existed.

Registered twelve months earlier.

Manager:

Tyler Bennett.

Member:

Olivia Bennett.

I had no memory of signing anything.

Then I found something worse.

A PDF operating agreement.

My signature appeared on the final page.

I stared at it.

It was my signature.

But not my handwriting.

Digital.

Copied.

I took a screenshot.

Then another.

My phone buzzed.

Tyler.

Where are you?

I didn't answer.

Another message.

Come back outside.

Then:

We need to talk.

I typed one sentence.

I already am.

He responded immediately.

What does that mean?

I looked at the operating agreement.

Then at the lake beyond the windows.

I typed:

Why did you open a company in my name?

The typing bubble appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then:

I didn't.

I almost smiled.

Because at that exact moment, I received another notification.

New document uploaded to Bennett Family Hospitality LLC.

The file was titled:

Emergency Asset Transfer Agreement.

I opened it.

The beneficiary was not Tyler.

Not me.

Not even Denise.

It was a company in Delaware.

Stonebridge Capital Holdings.

May you like

And the authorized signer—

was Denise.
