Chapter 14 - THE TEN-YEAR-OLD WHO REFUSED TO DISAPPEAR

Gerald Whitford had one final weapon.

A document claiming that Daniel Mercer had rejected Imani as his daughter.

For Lorraine, it was the cruelest lie of all.

She had heard Daniel's recording.

Seen the birthday gifts.

Held the photographs.

And watched a little girl cry because she would never meet the father who loved her.

Now Gerald wanted to erase that love with another signature.

Samuel immediately requested independent examination of the disputed document.

Rebecca gathered the original estate files.

And Lorraine prepared to testify about Naomi's final years.

The emergency hearing took place in a New York courtroom.

Imani did not attend the disputed financial proceedings.

Lorraine wanted her protected from Gerald's accusations.

Instead, the little girl spent the morning with a child counselor and Rebecca's trusted assistant, drawing airplanes and asking whether she could visit the Empire State Building before returning to Atlanta.

Inside the courtroom, Gerald sat beside his attorneys.

He wore an expensive navy suit.

His hair was perfectly styled.

And he looked nothing like the angry passenger who had refused to give a child her seat.

He appeared calm.

Respectable.

Almost innocent.

Until Samuel began presenting the evidence.

First came Daniel's authenticated estate instructions.

Then the correspondence with Naomi.

The original ownership records.

The birthday messages.

And Daniel's personal recording expressing his wish to provide for Imani.

Gerald's attorney argued that the later withdrawal document should control.

But the court heard that its signature was disputed and that the circumstances surrounding its creation required further examination.

An independent document specialist identified significant inconsistencies between the questioned signature and Daniel's verified signatures.

The timing also raised concerns.

Medical records indicated that Daniel had been hospitalized and seriously ill around the date of the alleged signing.

Rebecca testified about Daniel's efforts to locate Imani.

Lorraine testified about Naomi.

Then Samuel introduced the evidence of Gerald's attempts to suppress Imani's identity.

The altered records.

The fraudulent adoption paperwork.

And the unauthorized passenger-handling request.

Gerald's expression began changing.

His attorney whispered urgently.

But the most damaging evidence came from Patrick Doyle.

He testified about Gerald's instructions concerning the airplane reservation.

He described the attempt to create a seating confrontation.

And he acknowledged the payments he received for making unauthorized changes.

Lorraine sat motionless.

Every detail confirmed what she'd feared.

Gerald had targeted a child because her existence threatened his control.

The judge issued temporary orders preserving the disputed estate assets and maintaining independent oversight while the legal proceedings continued.

The court also confirmed that Lorraine's existing guardianship remained in effect.

Gerald did not gain control of Imani or her inherited interests.

When the hearing ended, Lorraine finally exhaled.

Then Samuel received a message from investigators.

He read it.

His expression became grave.

"What happened?" Rebecca asked.

"Gerald has been taken into custody in connection with the broader criminal investigation."

Lorraine covered her mouth.

Samuel continued.

"Authorities also have new forensic evidence relating to Naomi's fatal collision."

For several seconds, Lorraine couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, "Is it enough?"

Samuel answered carefully.

"It's significant. The case will have to proceed through the courts."

That evening, Lorraine returned to the hotel.

Imani was sitting beside the window wearing her favorite green hoodie.

She looked up.

"Miss Lorraine?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Did the mean man win?"

Lorraine knelt beside her.

"No."

Imani's eyes widened.

"Really?"

"Really."

The little girl smiled.

"Does that mean I get to go home?"

Lorraine hugged her.

"Yes, baby."

Imani rested her head against Lorraine's shoulder.

Then she whispered, "I don't care about the big house."

Lorraine smiled.

"I know."

"I just want you."

Tears filled Lorraine's eyes.

"You have me."

Imani looked up.

"Forever?"

Lorraine held her tightly.

"As long as I can be there for you, sweetheart."

Later that night, Rebecca arrived carrying a sealed box.

It had been recovered from Daniel's private storage facility.

She placed it on the table.

"Samuel believes this should be opened with you present."

Lorraine frowned.

"What is it?"

Rebecca carefully removed the lid.

Inside was a handwritten journal.

Its cover read:

FOR IMANI — MY LAST PROMISE.

Lorraine opened the first page.

Daniel had written a letter explaining his hopes for his daughter.

His wishes for her education.

Her happiness.

Her freedom to choose her own future.

Then Lorraine reached the final entry.

And discovered the secret Daniel had kept even from Rebecca.

He had prepared a special request concerning Imani's guardianship before his death.

Not to remove Lorraine.

Not to separate them.

But to make their family permanent.

At the bottom of the page, Daniel had written:

"If Lorraine Parker is willing, I want her to have the opportunity to become Imani's legal mother."
