Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO WAS LIED TO

Daniel Mercer had spent years mourning a family he believed he'd lost.

That was the conclusion Samuel reached after comparing the new photograph, old medical records, and correspondence hidden in Naomi's notebook.

Lorraine sat beside the conference table, feeling the weight of another terrible betrayal.

"Who told Daniel they were gone?"

Samuel examined the documents.

"His medical records show that after the aircraft accident, he was given information suggesting Naomi had left the country with Imani."

"By whom?"

Rebecca answered.

"Gerald was managing Daniel's personal affairs during his recovery."

Lorraine closed her eyes.

Of course.

Gerald Whitford.

The man who controlled access to Daniel.

The man who erased Imani from estate records.

The man who'd humiliated a child on an airplane because he believed she didn't belong in First Class.

He had spent years building a world in which Daniel's daughter didn't exist.

But one question remained.

Why had Naomi stayed hidden even after Daniel recovered?

Samuel found the answer in her notebook.

Gerald says Daniel will be killed if I contact him.

Lorraine stared.

Naomi had been trapped.

Protect her husband by staying away.

Protect her daughter by disappearing.

And hope Gerald never found them.

But he had found them.

Eventually.

And Naomi had died.

Lorraine's hands trembled.

Rebecca moved closer.

"Are you okay?"

Lorraine shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the next room, where Imani was reading.

"She deserved both her parents."

Rebecca nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.

"Yes."

That evening, Samuel received an urgent call.

A former Mercer Aerospace engineer wanted to provide evidence.

His name was Charles Bennett.

He had worked with Naomi on the navigation safety project.

Charles agreed to meet at the law firm's office.

He arrived carrying a small storage case.

"I should've come forward years ago," he admitted.

Samuel nodded.

"Tell us what you know."

Charles opened the case.

Inside was an old testing module.

He explained that Naomi discovered a serious software defect.

Under certain conditions, the system could produce incorrect position data.

She wanted further testing before release.

Gerald refused.

He claimed a delay would cost the company millions.

Naomi documented the defect.

Then she disappeared.

Charles looked down.

"After her death, I was told the records had been destroyed."

Lorraine leaned forward.

"But you kept a copy."

He nodded.

"I couldn't live with myself otherwise."

Samuel examined the module.

"Can the data be authenticated?"

"Yes. Independent specialists can verify its contents."

Rebecca looked at Charles.

"Why come forward now?"

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because I saw a video of that little girl being humiliated on the airplane."

Lorraine stopped breathing.

Someone had recorded the confrontation.

It had circulated online.

Charles continued.

"I recognized her last name."

He swallowed.

"And I realized Naomi's daughter was alive."

Lorraine's eyes filled with tears.

Then Charles opened a second file.

"This is what Gerald never wanted anyone to see."

A surveillance recording appeared.

Naomi stood inside a hangar arguing with Gerald.

Vanessa entered.

The video had no sound, but Naomi's expression was unmistakable.

Terrified.

Then a fourth person stepped into frame.

Daniel Mercer.

He moved between Naomi and Gerald.

Gerald shoved him.

Daniel fell backward against a metal equipment rack.

Lorraine covered her mouth.

Charles paused the recording.

"That was the incident that caused Daniel's head injury."

Samuel stared.

"But the official report said he was injured during a routine aircraft maintenance accident."

Charles nodded.

"That report was false."

Lorraine felt sick.

Then Charles advanced the video.

Gerald leaned toward the unconscious Daniel.

Vanessa looked toward Naomi.

And Naomi tried to reach her husband.

But Gerald grabbed her arm.

Then Charles revealed the final frame.

A security camera showed Vanessa carrying Imani toward a waiting vehicle.

The toddler was crying.

Lorraine stopped breathing.

Then Charles whispered:

"For six hours that day, Vanessa Whitford had custody of Imani Barrett—and nobody knows what happened during those six hours."
