Chapter 7 - THE MAN INSIDE THE COMPANY

Marcus Bell arrived at Vasic Maritime headquarters at 7:02 the next morning.

He had no idea Ronan had already copied his access logs.

No idea federal investigators were waiting two floors below.

No idea Elena had spent the night reading fourteen years of contracts.

She noticed the pattern at 4:11 A.M.

Not because she was smarter than everyone.

Because everyone else kept looking for theft.

Elena looked for repetition.

Northstar payments always appeared six days before major port votes.

Different amounts.

Different entities.

Same rhythm.

“They’re not payments to Stefan,” she told Ronan.

“What?”

“They’re reserve movements.”

He leaned over the spreadsheet.

“Explain.”

“Money leaves a Vasic subsidiary, passes through Northstar, touches Ashton Strategic, then moves again within seventy-two hours.”

“To where?”

“That’s what I couldn’t see.”

She expanded the beneficiary data.

Charitable foundations.

Construction companies.

Political action groups.

A maritime insurance cooperative.

Ronan swore.

“Influence payments.”

“Yes.”

“Stefan isn’t blackmailing the family.”

“He’s operating a network.”

“And Marcus?”

“Probably moving the money.”

Damien entered the library.

He had changed clothes.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

His eyes went first to Elena.

Then to the spreadsheet.

“What did you find?”

She almost told him not to involve himself.

But the numbers mattered more than anger.

“Northstar is not primarily extortion.”

Damien sat.

She explained.

By the time she finished, his face had hardened.

“My company funded all this.”

“Parts of it.”

“Without my knowledge.”

“Apparently.”

He stared at the screen.

“Could Marcus do this alone?”

“No.”

“Who else?”

Elena looked toward Ronan.

“Board-level approval or someone with override access.”

Damien’s expression changed.

“There are four.”

“Names.”

“Me. Marcus. Board chair Henry Ashton. And my mother.”

Elena went still.

“Your mother?”

Sofia Vasic lived in Monaco.

Had for ten years.

She rarely came to Boston.

She called Elena every Sunday.

Sent absurdly expensive baby clothes.

Despised Gabrielle Ashton.

Or claimed to.

“Does she still use her access?”

“No.”

“Can she?”

“Yes.”

Ronan looked at Damien.

“When was the last time you spoke to her?”

“Yesterday.”

“What did she say?”

“Asked whether Elena was resting enough.”

Elena almost laughed.

The family gift for normal conversation while everything burned.

They set the trap at headquarters.

Damien called Marcus into the executive conference room.

Elena watched through secure video from another floor.

Marcus entered smiling.

“Morning.”

Damien slid the unauthorized transfer across the table.

Marcus read it.

His face barely changed.

“Problem?”

“You tell me.”

“It looks legitimate.”

“I was in Nantucket.”

Marcus glanced up.

“Automated authorization?”

“No.”

“Then compromised token.”

“You control token audits.”

Marcus leaned back.

“Are you accusing me?”

“I’m asking.”

“No.”

Damien put down another document.

Photo from the witness-transport attack.

Marcus looked at it.

This time his face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

“Where did you get that?”

Damien’s voice turned cold.

“Interesting question.”

Marcus stood.

“I think I should call counsel.”

Federal agents entered.

Marcus ran.

Not toward the elevator.

Toward the emergency stairs.

He made it three floors before Ronan’s team stopped him.

Inside his briefcase, they found a second phone.

Encrypted.

One active chat.

Recipient name:

S.

Latest message:

THE WIFE FOUND THE FLOW.

Another:

MOVE SOFIA BEFORE DAMIEN REALIZES WHO SIGNED THE FIRST NORTHSTAR TRUST.

Damien read it twice.

“My mother.”

Elena’s pulse quickened.

Ronan immediately called Monaco security.

No answer.

Sofia’s house staff reported she had left the villa nine hours earlier.

Destination unknown.

Then Marcus’s phone received a new message.

S:

TOO LATE. MOTHER IS ALREADY WITH ME.

An image followed.

Sofia Vasic sitting inside a private jet.

Across from her—

Stefan.

Not kidnapped.

Not restrained.

Holding a champagne glass.

May you like

Smiling.

And Sofia was smiling too.
