Chapter 8 - THE FILE HIDDEN INSIDE MY OWN OFFICE

I finally went to Cole Dynamics.
Not because the company needed me.
Because Victor had stolen from Rachel’s father.
That distinction mattered.
Rachel stayed at the hospital with Owen.
Before I left, she said, “Come back.”
Two words.
Not romantic.
Not forgiving.
But they meant more to me than anything she could have said.
“I will.”
At headquarters, the atmosphere changed when I entered.
Employees stood straighter.
Conversations stopped.
For years, I had mistaken fear for respect.
Now I noticed the difference.
Claire led me to my office.
A hidden compartment behind an old filing cabinet had been opened.
Inside were scratches where a case had apparently been stored.
“How long has that been there?”
“Security says the wall hasn’t been renovated in seven years.”
Seven years.
Before Rachel and I married.
Before Harold died.
Before I knew Victor was using my company.
Claire searched old maintenance records.
Harold Bennett had visited the office during our first major expansion.
He had requested private access to inspect logistics contracts.
He must have hidden the case then.
“What could he have kept in it?”
“Evidence,” Claire said.
“Or insurance.”
We checked my desk, shelves, vents.
Then Claire found something taped beneath the lowest drawer.
An envelope.
My name was written in Harold’s handwriting.
I opened it.
Nathan, if you find this before Victor does, there may still be time.
My pulse accelerated.
I don’t trust you yet. But Rachel does. That means I have to hope you become the man she thinks you are.
I had to stop reading.
Claire pretended not to notice.
The letter explained that Harold had traced Victor’s money laundering through early Cole Dynamics vendors.
The black case contained original contracts, banking records, and one recorded conversation powerful enough to destroy Victor.
But Harold had hidden something even more important separately.
A master access key.
“What access key?” Claire asked.
The letter answered.
Victor’s offshore accounts are controlled through a security token embedded inside a company object Nathan will never throw away.
I frowned.
“What object?”
Claire looked around.
My office contained hundreds of expensive things.
Awards.
Prototype devices.
Framed patents.
Then I understood.
On the shelf behind my desk sat the original Cole Dynamics circuit board.
Our first product prototype.
Worthless commercially.
Priceless to me.
I removed the frame.
Behind the board was a tiny encrypted hardware token.
Victor hadn’t found it.
Claire exhaled.
“This could give federal investigators access to everything.”
My phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“Hey.”
Her breathing was fast.
“Nathan, Owen’s okay.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“Nothing with him.”
“Then what?”
“Someone came into my room while I was sleeping.”
My entire body went cold.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did they do?”
May you like
Rachel’s voice shook.
“They left the black case beside Owen’s bassinet.”
