Chapter 5 - THE WAREHOUSE RACHEL REFUSED TO SELL

Rachel’s father had died four years earlier.

Harold Bennett had been practical, quiet, and deeply suspicious of men who wore expensive watches.

He never liked me.

At the time, I thought it was because I was successful.

Looking back, he probably just saw me clearly.

The warehouse outside Evanston was still part of Rachel’s inheritance.

I had forgotten it existed.

She had not.

“What did your father mean by buried?” I asked.

“I thought he meant documents.”

“Where?”

“He never said.”

Claire arranged for a private investigator and our outside counsel to inspect the property.

I refused to leave the hospital.

That choice felt harder than it should have.

Every instinct screamed that I needed to control the investigation personally.

But Owen was undergoing cardiac monitoring.

Rachel was still recovering.

So I stayed.

For once, I let someone else solve a problem.

That evening, the investigator called.

“There’s a locked storage room beneath the warehouse office.”

“Open it.”

“We need Ms. Bennett’s authorization.”

Rachel signed electronically.

Twenty minutes later, the video feed showed a narrow basement.

Old shelving.

Metal cabinets.

Dust.

Then the investigator found a safe.

Rachel knew the combination.

Her father’s birthday.

Inside were paper ledgers.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

And several folders marked COLE DYNAMICS.

My stomach tightened.

“My company?”

Rachel stared at the screen.

One folder contained invoices from six years earlier.

Payments to shell companies.

Transfers routed through Switzerland.

Contracts signed before Cole Dynamics was large enough to justify the amounts.

“I didn’t authorize those,” I said.

Claire’s face went pale.

“I recognize one of the vendor names.”

“Which one?”

“Vantage Ridge Consulting.”

I knew it too.

Victor Hale’s private investment firm.

The man who had helped save Cole Dynamics during our worst year.

The man I had called a mentor.

The man pushing me to move operations to Zurich.

Rachel whispered, “Nathan…”

The investigator opened another file.

Inside was a photograph of Victor standing beside Harold Bennett outside the warehouse.

They were arguing.

On the back, Harold had written:

Victor wants access to Nathan’s company. He thinks the boy is too ambitious to notice who’s feeding him.

I felt sick.

Then the investigator found an audio recorder.

The batteries were dead, but the memory card was intact.

An hour later, Claire recovered the files.

Harold’s voice filled the hospital room.

“If you’re hearing this, something has gone wrong.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

Her father continued.

“Victor Hale has been moving money through Nathan Cole’s company for years.”

I stopped breathing.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Nathan doesn’t know.”

Rachel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“And if Victor realizes Rachel is pregnant someday, he may come after the child too.”
