Chapter 5 - THE PRIEST WHO REMEMBERED THE FIRE

Father Michael opened the door of Saint Agnes Church only after Roman knocked three times.
He was an elderly man with silver eyebrows and a trembling hand, but the moment he saw Roman, his eyes filled with tears.
“Isabella's boy,” he whispered.
Roman looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“You knew my mother?”
“I heard her confession the night she vanished.”
Father Michael led us into a narrow office behind the sanctuary. The walls were covered with photographs of former parishioners, and the air smelled of wax and old paper.
He explained that Lucia had worked in the Vale household as a cook and caretaker. She had become close to Isabella after Roman's birth, especially during the months when family disagreements turned increasingly dangerous.
“Your mother feared someone in her own household,” the priest said. “She told me that if anything happened to her, the truth would be hidden in a place only Lucia could find.”
Roman leaned forward.
“Who was she afraid of?”
Father Michael hesitated.
“Adrian.”
The name hung between us.
According to the priest, Isabella had discovered that someone was diverting money from the family's shipping business and using the profits to purchase influence over police officers and local officials. She planned to expose the scheme and take Roman away before he grew old enough to become part of it.
The night of the fire, Lucia had arrived at the church carrying a frightened toddler wrapped in a blanket.
“She said Isabella was still alive,” Father Michael recalled. “But she couldn't bring her child with her. It wasn't safe.”
Roman covered his mouth.
For thirty-four years, he had believed his mother was dead.
Father Michael opened an old register and found a handwritten entry beside the date of the fire.
A woman named Rose Bell had been admitted to a private refuge under emergency protection.
Before the priest could explain further, a car door slammed outside.

He peered through the curtains and turned pale.
“Adrian has found us,” he whispered.
