Chapter 5 - THE LOCKER MARIA NEVER OPENED

St. Agnes was not a church.
It was an old private bank.
Maria Moretti had rented deposit box 214 twenty-three years earlier.
Dominic did not break into it.
I asked if mafia bosses usually waited for court orders.
He said:
“Not the good ones.”
I said:
“Are you a good one?”
He looked at me.
“I’m trying.”
That sounded better than pretending.
The court authorized access because the box was tied to my guardianship case.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And a letter addressed to Sofia.
The photograph showed Maria, Sofia, and Victor.
Behind them stood another man.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Dominic stared.
“Julian Mercer.”
“Who is that?”
“Family attorney.”
“Bad?”
“I don’t know yet.”
I was learning that grown-up secrets usually began with those words.
The flash drive contained financial records.
My trust had not originally been sixty-two million.
It had started with twelve.
The money came from Sofia’s shares in a medical technology company.
Over six years, investments grew.
But someone had tried repeatedly to withdraw funds.
Requests denied.
Signer:
VICTOR MORETTI.
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“He tried to access Lily’s money before we knew she existed.”
The lawyer present nodded.
“Which means he knew.”
I hugged Mr. Bear.
Victor knew I existed.
For years.
He never came.
Never checked.
Never asked.
Until the money became available.
That hurt differently from strangers rejecting me.
Dominic saw my face.
“He did not reject you.”
I looked down.
“He ignored me.”
“Yes.”
“Same feeling.”
Dominic went quiet.
Then Maria’s letter.
She wrote that Sofia had discovered Victor and Julian were trying to seize her shares.
Sofia planned to leave.
Maria helped.
But before Sofia disappeared, she learned she was pregnant.
That changed everything.
She created my trust.
Not to make me rich.
To keep her shares away from Victor.
Then one line:
Dominic must not know until he chooses a life outside Victor’s control.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Maria had not trusted him either.
Not completely.
I reached out.
Touched his hand.
“You didn’t know how yet.”
He looked at me.
“How what?”
“To be different.”
His eyes filled.
Maybe six-year-olds should not have to explain grown men to themselves.
But sometimes adults were slow.
Then the lawyer opened one final encrypted document.
A guardianship nomination written by Sofia.
If she died, she named one person.
Not Maria.
Not Victor.
Not Dominic.
ELIZABETH HARPER.
I frowned.
“Who’s Elizabeth?”
The lawyer searched.
Then looked up.
“Your father’s mother.”
Dominic froze.
“My father?”
For the first time, the file contained a name.
Daniel Harper.
The lawyer went pale.
Dominic went even paler.
May you like
Because Daniel Harper had not been an ordinary man.
He had been an undercover federal agent investigating the Moretti family.
