Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT EVERYONE

Samuel Hart had spent thirty years in federal law enforcement.
Awards.
Television interviews.
Integrity speeches.
He was also corrupt.
Daniel had proof.
Hart protected Mercer’s financial network in exchange for information and money.
He buried Sofia’s crash investigation.
Altered Elizabeth’s protection records.
Allowed Daniel’s location to leak.
And most importantly:
He knew exactly where I lived.
St. Jude’s was not an accident.
Hart had approved my placement there.
Why?
Because the orphanage received federal grants through Maria’s foundation.
Every adult around my life had been connected somehow.
That made me angry.
“Did anybody know me because I’m me?”
Dominic went still.
Daniel looked devastated.
Then a small voice came from behind.
Lucy.
My best friend from St. Jude’s.
The director had brought her for a visit.
She held one of my butterfly drawings.
“I did.”
I smiled.
So hard.
There.
One person.
No money.
No secrets.
Just Lily.
I rolled toward her.
We hugged.
Dominic looked away.
Maybe his eyes were wet.
I pretended not to see.
Hart was arrested after an independent inspector general operation.
No Moretti interference.
Daniel insisted.
Dominic agreed.
Evidence mattered more if it did not come from mafia revenge.
Mercer began cooperating.
Hart’s network collapsed quickly.
Then another truth emerged.
Sofia’s car crash had not been intended to kill her.
Mercer ordered the brakes weakened to frighten her.
The failure became catastrophic.
That did not make him less responsible.
But it explained why Victor thought nobody would die.
Everybody had believed they could control danger.
Nobody could.
Dominic sat with me that evening.
“What are you thinking?”
“About grown-ups.”
“Dangerous subject.”
I nodded.
“You all think you can scare people just enough.”
His face changed.
“Yes.”
“But scary things don’t stop when you want.”
“No.”
He looked ashamed.
Then I asked:
“Are you still a bad man?”
He took a long time.
“I’ve done bad things.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“No.”
He breathed.
“I don’t want to be.”
I thought.
“That’s better.”
Then Daniel entered holding court paperwork.
Temporary custody review.
Now that my biological father was alive, everything changed.
Dominic looked at him.
Daniel looked at Dominic.
I looked at both.
Adults became nervous again.
The court could place me with Daniel.
Or keep me temporarily with Dominic.
Or return me to St. Jude’s during investigation.
Everyone had opinions.
I had one too.
At the hearing, the judge asked:
“Lily, where do you feel safest?”
I looked at Dad.
Then Dominic.
Then Mr. Bear.
And said:
“I want both.”
The courtroom became silent.
The judge smiled faintly.
“That may be possible.”
But then the trust attorney stood.
“There is a complication.”
Of course.
Sofia’s original guardianship document contained one more sealed page.
May you like
It said Daniel Harper could raise me only if he gave up something first.
His federal badge.
