Chapter 4 - THE SECRET MY MOTHER FEARED

I called Mom.
She answered immediately.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“Jesse, listen to me.”
“Why isn't Tyler Dad's son?”
Silence.
“Mom?”
“He isn't.”
“Who is his father?”
“I can't tell you.”
“You threatened my brother's life by saying someone would hurt him.”
“I didn't threaten you.”
“You told me to destroy evidence.”
“I told you to survive.”
Her voice broke.
For the first time in my life, my mother sounded terrified.
“Your father has people watching you.”
I looked through the window.
A black sedan sat across the street.
“Elena,” I whispered.
She moved toward the window.
The sedan started its engine.
Then it drove away.
Mom continued.
“Your father became involved with Bellweather before you were born.”
“Why?”
“He owed them money.”
“How much?”
“Too much.”
I closed my eyes.
“And Tyler?”
She hesitated.
“Tyler was born after your father disappeared for six months.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Daniel wasn't there.”
“Then who was?”
Mom started crying.
“His name was Victor Hale.”
The name meant nothing to me.
Until Elena looked up sharply.
“Victor Hale?”
“You know him?”
“He was one of the founders of Bellweather.”
I felt a chill.
Mom continued.
“Victor promised to protect me and Tyler.”
“And did he?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“He died.”
“When?”
“Eleven years ago.”
I looked at the property document.
The witness signature.
The dead witness.
Everything connected.
Victor had died eleven years ago.
The deed had been altered twelve years ago.
And Tyler's supposed inheritance had been mentioned by Dad as if it were legitimate.
But if Tyler wasn't Dad's son, why would he be entitled to anything?
Unless the entire plan wasn't about Tyler.
It was about Victor.
Elena suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Jesse.”
“What?”
“Victor Hale had a daughter.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
She opened her laptop.
A photograph appeared.
A woman in her early thirties.
Blonde hair.
Gray eyes.
Name: Lauren Hale.
I recognized her.
Everyone in Denver's investment world recognized her.
Lauren Hale was Bellweather's current managing partner.
She had appeared in business magazines for years.
And she was rumored to have inherited Victor's entire fortune.
I whispered, “Why would she care about my building?”
Elena scrolled through the corporate records.
Then she stopped.
“Because Bellweather doesn't just want your building.”
“What do they want?”
She turned the screen toward me.
A merger agreement.
Carter House Holdings.
Bellweather Capital.
And a third entity.
Carter Family Ventures.
I stared at the document.
“What's Carter Family Ventures?”
Elena looked uncomfortable.
“Your father's company.”
I felt my stomach drop.
The three entities were being merged.
My building would become collateral.
And if the forged loan was approved, control of Carter House would transfer automatically.
“But why?”
Elena pointed to the final clause.
“Because whoever owns Carter House controls a voting block worth nearly forty million dollars.”
I stared at her.
My family hadn't wanted my apartment.
They wanted my voting rights.
Tyler hadn't moved into Unit 4B because he needed somewhere to live.
He had been placed there because someone wanted him to establish residency.
I suddenly understood.
They were preparing evidence that the property was being used as a shared family asset.
Dad wasn't trying to help Tyler.
He was building a legal story.
A story designed to make me look like the selfish daughter who abandoned her pregnant sister-in-law while the family had nowhere to live.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice said:
“You're looking in the wrong direction.”
“Who is this?”
“Ask your father what happened to Victor Hale.”
The line went dead.
Elena stared at me.
“Victor died eleven years ago.”
I looked at the flash drive.
“No.”
I whispered.
May you like
“He disappeared eleven years ago.”
And suddenly, I understood why Grandma had never said he was dead.
