Chapter 3 - THE BOX GRANDMA HID

I went to my grandmother's old house that evening.

No one had lived there since her death, but I had kept the keys because I couldn't bring myself to sell it.

Every room still smelled faintly of cedar and lavender.

Elena came with me.

We searched through old files, tax records, letters, and photographs.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the fireplace.

Grandma had once told me, “If you ever need the truth, don't look where people expect you to look.”

I had thought she was joking.

Now I removed the brass grate.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside sat a metal box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

There were three envelopes.

The first contained an old photograph of Grandma standing beside Carter House.

The second contained a handwritten letter.

The third was sealed.

I opened the letter first.

My grandmother's handwriting filled the page.

Jesse,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

Your father will tell you the property was meant for the family.

He will lie.

I stopped reading.

Elena whispered, “Keep going.”

I continued.

I never trusted Daniel with the building.

He believes property creates power, and power belongs to whoever controls the paperwork.

That is why I placed Carter House into a trust.

Not for Daniel.

Not for Tyler.

For you.

My heart pounded.

At the bottom of the page, she had written:

But there is something you must know about your father.

He did not lose his business.

He did not fail.

He transferred it.

I stared at the words.

Elena frowned.

“Transferred it where?”

I opened the second envelope.

Inside was a list of company names.

Some were familiar.

Others were not.

At the bottom was Bellweather Capital.

The same company connected to the forged loan.

I felt sick.

My father had not accidentally become involved with Bellweather.

He had been connected to them for years.

Then I opened the sealed envelope.

A small flash drive fell into my palm.

There was a handwritten label:

FOR JESSE — ONLY AFTER THEY TRY TO TAKE THE BUILDING.

I inserted it into my laptop.

A video appeared.

My grandmother sat in a chair, looking directly into the camera.

She looked older than I remembered.

“Jesse,” she said, “if you're watching this, your father has finally made his move.”

I stopped breathing.

Grandma continued.

“Your father has been using family properties to secure private loans. When one property fails, he moves the debt to another.”

The screen showed documents.

Loan agreements.

Wire transfers.

Shell companies.

And my name.

Over and over.

My grandmother explained that she had discovered Daniel was using family assets to cover enormous gambling debts and business losses.

When she confronted him, he threatened to take control of Carter House.

So she created the trust.

She transferred ownership to me.

Then she added one final warning.

“Your mother knows.”

I stared at the screen.

“No.”

Elena looked at me.

“What?”

“My mother knew.”

The video continued.

“She knows what Daniel did. She also knows what happened to Tyler.”

The screen suddenly went black.

A second file appeared.

Its title was only one word.

BIRTH.

I clicked it.

A hospital record appeared.

Tyler Carter.

Date of birth.

Mother: Diane Carter.

Father: Daniel Carter.

Then I saw another document.

A paternity test.

The result was not what I expected.

Tyler was not my father's biological son.

Elena covered her mouth.

I stared at the screen.

“Then whose son is he?”

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message from Mom.

Please stop searching.

Then another.

Your father isn't the person you think he is.

May you like

And finally:

If you want Tyler to stay alive, destroy the flash drive.
