Chapter 13 - THE SON ARTHUR NEVER KNEW HE HAD

Arthur Cole had a son.
Daniel.
My “brother.”
The truth went back thirty-seven years.
My father had an affair with Arthur’s wife.
Or so everyone believed.
But DNA records uncovered during Elena’s investigation showed Daniel was Arthur’s biological child.
The family had hidden it.
My father raised Daniel as his own.
Arthur never knew.
Daniel apparently discovered the truth five years earlier.
And hated both men for it.
Arthur for not knowing.
My father for lying.
Me for inheriting everything.
That hatred became ambition.
Ambition became betrayal.
I stared at the DNA report.
“How did he find out?”
Elena looked at me.
“Private medical testing.”
“And Arthur?”
“Still doesn’t know.”
My chest tightened.
The man Daniel was threatening to kill was his own father.
We gave the information to authorities coordinating the rescue.
No vigilante war.
No army.
No revenge.
I hated every second of waiting.
But I had finally learned that control was not the same thing as responsibility.
Hours later, a call came.
Arthur had been recovered alive.
Injured.
But alive.
I exhaled for the first time in what felt like days.
Then another message arrived.
Daniel had fled.
Chicago operations were compromised.
Several of my businesses were under investigation.
My empire was collapsing.
I should have been furious.
Instead, I looked toward Norah.
She sat beside Elena.
Mother and daughter laughing over old photographs.
And something inside me became strangely calm.
Maybe the empire needed to collapse.
Maybe the worst thing that could happen wasn’t losing power.
Maybe it was keeping it long enough to lose everyone else.
I told Elena.
“I’m done.”
She looked at me.
“With Daniel?”
“With all of it.”
Her expression changed.
“The organization?”
“Yes.”
“You can’t just walk away.”
“I know.”
I took a breath.
“I’ll cooperate. Turn over records. Separate legitimate businesses. Accept whatever comes.”
She stared.
“Why?”
I looked toward Norah.
“Because I promised her my most important job was being her father.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“And us?”
I looked at her.
“What do you want?”
She seemed surprised.
Maybe the old Warren would have said come home.
Ordered.
Expected.
Now I asked.
Elena swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
I nodded.
“Then we start there.”
For the first time, she smiled at me.
Small.
Careful.
Real.
Then Elias entered.
“Daniel has contacted authorities.”
My stomach tightened.
“Surrendering?”
“Maybe.”
He handed me a message.
Daniel wanted one meeting.
With Arthur.
Alone.
Arthur was awake.
And when told the truth about Daniel’s parentage, he had begun crying.
May you like
Then he said the only thing no one expected:
“Tell my son I already forgave him.”
