Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO COME HOME

Those words hurt more than any bullet ever had.

Elena was afraid of me.

Not Arthur.

Not Elias.

Me.

I had spent years telling myself I kept violence away from home.

That Norah never saw it.

That Elena understood the difference between Warren the father and Hayes the boss.

Maybe I had been lying to myself.

Elias continued.

“She watched you become harder after she disappeared.”

My jaw tightened.

“I thought she was dead.”

“I know.”

“And you expected me to become gentle?”

“No.”

He looked toward the camera.

“But Elena saw what grief did to you.”

I looked away.

After her “death,” I expanded the organization.

Punished enemies.

Tightened control.

Made people fear my name.

I told myself it kept Norah safe.

Maybe it simply made Elena more certain she couldn’t return.

The call ended.

Norah and I were flown onward after authorities cleared the travel arrangements.

This time, security was legitimate and transparent.

No Arthur.

No hidden watchers.

Just police coordination and airline officials.

When we reached London, rain covered the city.

Elias met us at a secure building.

Norah stared at him.

“You’re Grandpa?”

He began crying.

“Yes.”

She hugged Teddy.

“You lied.”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Norah frowned.

“Grown-ups keep saying that.”

I almost laughed despite everything.

Elias nodded.

“You’re right.”

Then a door opened.

Elena stepped through.

For four years, I had dreamed about this moment.

She looked older.

A thin scar crossed her temple.

Her dark hair fell past her shoulders.

But she was Elena.

My wife.

Norah stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

Elena covered her mouth.

Then fell to her knees.

Norah screamed.

“Mom!”

She ran.

Elena caught her.

They collapsed together.

Crying.

Laughing.

Holding each other.

I stood ten feet away.

Frozen.

Elena finally looked at me.

Our eyes met.

Everything inside me broke.

I whispered:

“Elena.”

She stood slowly.

“Warren.”

I wanted to run to her.

I didn’t.

I had learned something.

Love didn’t give me permission to close distance she hadn’t invited me to cross.

So I stayed where I was.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you for bringing her.”

My throat tightened.

“She’s your daughter.”

Elena nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she said:

“I owe you the truth.”

I swallowed.

“All of it.”

She nodded.

“The crash was staged.”

“I know.”

“Arthur helped.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He helped me escape.”

I stared.

“Then why did he target the flight?”

Her expression darkened.

“He didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

Elena looked toward Elias.

May you like

Then whispered the name I never expected.

“Your brother.”
