Chapter 12 - THE REASON DANY WAS IN THE TRUST

“Why is my brother in your family trust?”
Tessa stared at the document.
Dany did too.
He had joined them at the attorney’s office after Victor’s arrest.
Samuel looked equally confused.
The lawyer opened an older letter.
Antonio Marquetti had written it sixteen years earlier.
Before the attack.
Before the real Salvatore died.
Before Samuel became a ghost.
The letter explained that Thomas Whitlock had saved Samuel’s life.
Tessa stopped breathing.
“What?”
When Samuel was sixteen, one of Antonio’s enemies planned to kidnap him from school.
Thomas was working construction at a Marquetti property nearby.
He overheard two men discussing the route.
He reported it.
The kidnapping failed.
Antonio never forgot.
Years later, Thomas refused money.
So Antonio created a small protected trust for Thomas’s future children.
“Dany was added at birth,” the lawyer explained.
“What about me?”
“You were already legally an adult by the time Thomas requested the amendment.”
Tessa shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
The lawyer looked uncomfortable.
“Your father created a separate account for you.”
Her throat tightened.
“What account?”
A college fund.
Enough for four years.
Architecture school.
Tessa stared.
She had once wanted to study architectural design.
Before rent.
Before Dany’s hearing loss.
Before medical bills.
Before life became survival.
“Where is it?”
The lawyer’s expression darkened.
“Gone.”
“Gone?”
“Withdrawn after Thomas died.”
“By who?”
A name appeared.
Tessa stared.
Her mother.
Laura Whitlock.
The woman who vanished from their lives six years ago.
Dany looked sick.
“She took it?”
The lawyer nodded.
Tessa sat down.
All those years.
Working double shifts.
Believing their father left nothing.
And their mother had emptied the one thing he created for her.
Samuel watched Tessa’s face.
He signed:
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded.
Then the lawyer continued.
“There is more.”
Of course.
Thomas had known Laura was struggling with addiction.
He tried to protect the remaining trust.
So he appointed a secondary custodian.
Frank Dalton.
Brett’s father.
The man who later killed him.
Tessa felt cold.
Frank had access to her father’s money.
Victor used debt to control Frank.
Then used Frank to kill Thomas.
The entire tragedy had been engineered through money.
Dany whispered:
“Where is Mom now?”
Nobody knew.
Then Luke entered.
“We may.”
He placed a recent photograph on the table.
Laura Whitlock.
Alive.
Standing outside St. Matthew’s Medical Residence.
Beside her was Victor Marquetti.
The photograph had been taken two weeks earlier.
Tessa stared.
May you like
Her mother hadn’t simply disappeared.
She had been connected to Victor too.
