Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE WHERE HIS MOTHER USED TO SING

Margaret used to sing in the old Marquetti lake house.

Before Samuel lost most of his hearing.

Before Antonio taught his sons fear.

Before Victor turned the family into a machine.

Samuel remembered the piano room.

Margaret would sit by the windows overlooking Lake Michigan and sing old Italian songs.

The house had been abandoned for twelve years.

Victor owned it now.

Police were notified.

Samuel refused to turn it into a private war.

That surprised everyone except Tessa.

She was starting to understand the man beneath the name.

They reached the property near dawn with investigators positioned nearby.

Victor’s SUV was outside.

Margaret was inside.

So was Victor.

Samuel entered with Tessa only after police cleared the first floor.

The piano room was empty.

Dust covered the keys.

Margaret’s old sheet music remained inside the bench.

Samuel touched it.

Then froze.

One page had been folded differently.

He opened the music.

A handwritten message from his brother.

Under C.

Tessa frowned.

“C?”

Samuel pointed toward the piano.

Middle C.

He removed the ivory key carefully.

Inside the narrow cavity was a small brass key.

Not a ledger.

A key.

To what?

Then Margaret appeared in the doorway.

Alone.

Samuel rushed toward her.

She touched his face.

Her hands trembled.

SAMUEL.

He nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she signed:

SORRY.

“For what?” Tessa asked.

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

Victor stepped out.

Gun in hand.

“For raising a son who never learned when to quit.”

Samuel moved in front of Tessa.

Victor smiled.

“How touching.”

Police had not seen him move from a hidden passage.

Victor pointed the gun toward Samuel.

“Give me the key.”

Samuel signed:

“No.”

Victor laughed.

“You think a dead brother’s message makes you brave?”

Samuel did not move.

Victor looked at Tessa.

“Maybe she does.”

The gun shifted toward her.

Samuel’s entire body changed.

He reached into his jacket.

Victor shouted:

“Don’t.”

Samuel froze.

Margaret stepped forward.

Victor snapped:

“Stay back.”

She ignored him.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She spoke.

Her damaged voice came out rough.

Broken.

But clear enough.

“Victor.”

He looked at her.

“You killed my son.”

His expression flickered.

Margaret continued.

“And I remember.”

Silence.

Victor went pale.

For fifteen years, he believed her memory was too damaged to testify.

He was wrong.

Police rushed in seconds later.

Victor was arrested without a shot fired.

The brass key opened a safe deposit box.

Inside were the complete ledger, Salvatore’s original identity documents, Victor’s payment records, and proof that Thomas Whitlock had tried to expose the construction fraud.

But one document shocked Tessa most.

A trust.

Created by Antonio Marquetti.

Beneficiary:

Samuel Rafael Bell Marquetti.

And beside Samuel’s name was another:

Daniel Whitlock.

May you like

Dany.

Tessa’s brother.
