Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY EMPIRE BUILT ON LIES

Graham Mercer was waiting inside Ethan’s penthouse when they arrived.
He stood beside the windows overlooking Boston Harbor, holding a glass of whiskey.
At sixty-four, he remained an imposing man.
Silver hair.
Perfectly tailored suit.
The kind of smile that had closed billion-dollar deals.
Ethan stopped in the doorway.
“How did you get in?”
Graham lifted his glass.
“I helped pay for the building.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Graham glanced at Claire.
“So this is the conservator.”
Claire held his gaze.
“This is the uncle.”
Graham smiled.
“I see why Ethan likes you.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You knew Evelyn Bennett was alive.”
Graham’s smile disappeared.
“Careful, Ethan.”
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
The admission struck like a physical blow.
Ethan stared at him.
“For twenty-eight years?”
“More or less.”
“You let her daughter believe she was dead.”
Graham set down his glass.
“Some decisions were made to protect the company.”
Claire felt rage rise in her throat.
“My mother was locked away.”
“Your mother possessed documents capable of destroying thousands of jobs.”
“She possessed evidence of crimes.”
Graham turned toward her.
“History is rarely as simple as people like you imagine.”
Claire stepped closer.
“People like me?”
“People who believe being right is enough.”
Ethan moved beside her.
“Leave.”
Graham looked at his nephew.
“You don’t understand what you’re risking.”
“Then explain it.”
“The Whitmore records implicate investors, banks, and families who still control enormous assets.”
“Then they can answer for their actions.”
Graham laughed without humor.
“You sound exactly like your father.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Did you kill him?”
For the first time, Graham looked genuinely shaken.
“No.”
“Did you know someone was tampering with his medication?”
Graham said nothing.
Ethan took another step.
“Answer me.”
“I suspected.”
Claire watched Ethan’s face.
It was the expression of a man watching his childhood collapse.
“You suspected,” Ethan repeated.
“And you did nothing.”
Graham looked away.
“Charles was going to destroy everything we built.”
“So you let him die?”
“No. I was a coward. There’s a difference.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Not to my father.”
Graham reached into his jacket.
Claire instinctively stepped back.
But he removed only an envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“Your father left this with me.”
Ethan did not move.
“Why give it to me now?”
“Because Victoria has lost control.”
“What does that mean?”
“She’s been working with people I no longer trust.”
Claire looked sharply at him.
“Daniel Cross?”
Graham nodded.
“He was laundering money through restoration contracts. When he threatened to expose the arrangement, someone silenced him.”
“Victoria?” Ethan asked.
“I believe so.”
“Then why protect her?”
“Because she has copies of documents that could implicate all of us.”
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Charles Mercer.
My son,
If you are reading this, I failed to finish what I started.
Do not protect our name at the expense of the truth.
A family legacy is not worth preserving if it requires innocent people to suffer.
Ethan read the letter twice.
Then he folded it carefully.
Graham watched him.
“What are you going to do?”
“What my father asked.”
“You’ll destroy the company.”
“Then I’ll build something better.”
Graham shook his head.
“You have no idea how dangerous Victoria has become.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Where is she?”
Graham looked at her.
“She disappeared this morning.”
Ethan’s phone rang.
Margaret.
He answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Ethan, the foundation’s archive has been breached.”
“What?”
“Someone used executive credentials to enter the main vault.”
“Was anything stolen?”
“Yes.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
Margaret hesitated.
“The original Whitmore manuscript.”
Ethan looked at Graham.
Then Margaret continued.
“And Claire, there’s something you need to know.”
Claire took the phone.
May you like
“What?”
“The security system shows the credentials used belonged to you.”
