Chapter 11 - THE SECRET HE HAD KEPT SINCE HE WAS NINETEEN

Claire arrived at Ethan’s penthouse before sunrise.

She did not call.

She did not text.

She simply rang the bell and waited.

When Ethan opened the door, he looked exhausted.

“Claire?”

She held up the photograph.

His expression changed instantly.

“Where did you get that?”

“That’s what I came to ask you.”

He stared at the image.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Claire felt her stomach twist.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“At the accident.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I knew who she was.”

Claire stepped backward.

“And you never told me?”

“I didn’t recognize your connection until we found the bank documents.”

“But you recognized the photograph.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because I was afraid you’d think I was involved.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Then tell me everything.”

Ethan led her into the living room.

He sat opposite her, leaving space between them.

“I was nineteen. My father had asked me to drive to Vermont with him. He said he needed to meet someone who had important documents.”

“Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“We arrived too late. Her car had gone off the road.”

Claire gripped the photograph.

“Was she alive?”

“Yes.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Ethan continued.

“My father pulled her from the vehicle. I helped carry you away from the wreck.”

Claire stared at him.

“You saved me?”

“My father did most of it.”

“But you were there.”

“Yes.”

She looked down at the scar beside her eyebrow.

For years, she had remembered a young man’s voice telling her to stay awake.

She had assumed he was a paramedic.

Now she remembered the words.

Look at me. Keep your eyes open. Help is coming.

She looked at Ethan.

“That was you.”

He nodded.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ethan’s voice softened.

“I remember you asking for your mother.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“What did you tell me?”

“That she was getting help.”

“Did you know they were going to take her away?”

“No. By the time the ambulances arrived, my father had called someone he trusted. I assumed everything was being handled properly.”

“Who did he call?”

“Richard Hale.”

Claire went still.

Ethan lowered his head.

“That was the mistake.”

She stood.

For a moment, Ethan thought she would leave.

Instead, she walked toward the window.

“I spent years thinking everyone had abandoned us.”

“I know.”

“No, Ethan. You don’t.”

He accepted the words without defending himself.

Claire turned.

“Why did you keep this from me after you realized?”

“Because every time I tried to explain, I imagined what it would sound like.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“You’re right.”

The simplicity of his answer disarmed her.

He rose.

“I’m sorry, Claire. I was wrong.”

She looked at him for a long time.

Then her phone rang.

Evelyn.

“Mom?”

Her mother sounded frightened.

“Claire, listen carefully. Someone came to the house.”

“What house?”

“The safe house Margaret arranged.”

Claire’s blood turned cold.

“Where are you?”

“I got away. But they took Grace.”

Ethan was already reaching for his phone.

Claire gripped hers.

“Who took her?”

Evelyn began crying.

“I saw his face.”

“Whose?”

“Graham Mercer.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

But Evelyn continued.

“He said he was trying to protect her.”

“From whom?”

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“From Victoria. She’s not working alone.”

“Who is?”

May you like

Evelyn’s answer was barely audible.

“Someone inside the police department.”
