Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO HAD BEEN ERASED

Elena had never known her father's name.

Caroline told her he had died before she was born.

Sophia's old photographs showed no wedding.

No husband.

No man standing beside her at the hospital.

For twenty-seven years, Elena had accepted the empty space in her family history.

Now Victoria Belandi was telling her that even that emptiness had been carefully manufactured.

Dante brought Elena to his mother's recovery room at a secure hospital.

Isabella Moretti was sitting upright when they arrived.

She looked at Elena for a long moment.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"You have Sophia's smile."

Elena sat beside the bed.

"You knew my mother."

Isabella nodded.

"She was my friend."

"Then please tell me who my father was."

Isabella closed her eyes.

The room became very still.

"His name was Daniel Marlo."

Elena felt the name settle inside her.

Daniel.

For the first time in her life, her father had a name.

"What happened to him?"

Isabella reached for her hand.

"Daniel was a financial investigator. He was examining the Belandi foundation when he met Sophia."

Dante frowned.

"An investigator?"

"Yes. He believed someone was laundering stolen charity funds through waterfront development contracts."

Elena leaned forward.

"Was he killed?"

Isabella hesitated.

"He disappeared shortly before you were born."

"Caroline said he died."

"Caroline said many things that weren't true."

Elena swallowed.

"Did my mother know where he went?"

"Not at first."

Isabella looked toward Dante.

"Years later, Sophia discovered Daniel had entered federal witness protection. He had agreed to testify against Vincent and the Belandis."

Dante went completely still.

"My father?"

Isabella nodded.

"Vincent discovered who Daniel was. He threatened Sophia and the baby unless Daniel stopped cooperating."

Elena pulled her hand away.

"Me?"

Isabella's voice broke.

"You were born into a war you never understood."

Dante looked down.

The weight of his father's legacy seemed to settle across his shoulders.

Elena noticed.

But she wasn't angry with him.

He hadn't chosen Vincent.

Just as she hadn't chosen Caroline.

"What happened to Daniel?" she asked.

Isabella reached for an envelope beneath her pillow.

"I kept this hidden for years."

Inside was a faded photograph of a young man with kind brown eyes.

He stood beside Sophia on a beach.

His arm rested gently around her waist.

Elena stared at him.

The shape of his smile.

The curve of his eyebrows.

The same small dimple in his left cheek.

She pressed a hand over her mouth.

"My dad."

Isabella nodded.

"He loved you before you were born."

Elena began crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

She simply couldn't stop the tears.

For twenty-seven years, she had believed both parents had chosen to leave her.

Now she was discovering how hard they had fought to keep her alive.

Then Isabella handed her a second document.

A letter addressed to Sophia.

It had been written just six months earlier.

I know you are alive. I never stopped looking for you. If you can read this, tell our daughter I kept my promise.

Elena looked up.

"He's alive?"

Isabella smiled through her tears.

"I believe so."

Dante took the envelope.

A federal return address was printed in the corner.

Washington, D.C.

But beneath the letter was something even more astonishing.

An emergency contact number.

Elena reached for her phone.

Before she could dial, Dante's phone rang.

Marco.

"Boss, we found Caroline."

"Where?"

"She's at the old Whitcomb estate. We have officers approaching."

"And Sophia?"

Marco paused.

"We believe she's inside."

Dante stood.

Then Marco spoke again.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"Caroline has been sending money to someone for almost twenty years."

Dante looked at Elena.

"Who?"

Marco's answer left the room silent.

"Daniel Marlo."

Elena stared at the photograph of her father.

Because the payments weren't marked as medical expenses.
