Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LEFT

"And if you were told she abandoned you, somebody lied."

Dante Moretti's words settled over the dinner table like a death sentence.

Elena Marlo couldn't move.

For nineteen years, she had believed her mother had walked away from her eight-year-old daughter without looking back.

Now Boston's most feared mafia boss was telling her that everything she knew might be wrong.

"That's impossible," Aunt Caroline whispered.

Dante turned toward her.

"Which part, Mrs. Whitmore? That Sophia saved my mother, or that someone lied about her disappearance?"

Caroline's face lost its color.

Victoria Belandi set down her champagne glass.

"Dante, you're frightening the poor girl over an old piece of jewelry."

He ignored her.

"Elena, look at me."

She raised her eyes.

"Your mother was a restoration specialist. Nineteen years ago, she worked on a private collection belonging to my family. One night, our waterfront warehouse caught fire. My mother was trapped inside."

Elena gripped her pendant.

"Sophia went into that burning building," Dante continued. "She brought my mother out alive."

"Then why have I never heard about this?"

"Because two days later, Sophia disappeared."

Caroline pushed back her chair.

"Elena, we're leaving."

But Dante's security chief, Marco, had already stepped toward the door.

"Sit down, Caroline," Dante said.

"You have no right to keep us here!"

"I'm not keeping Elena anywhere. She's free to leave whenever she chooses."

His gaze sharpened.

"But you and I have unfinished business."

Elena stood.

"Stop speaking about me like I'm not here."

The room fell silent again.

Dante looked at her, and something unexpected passed through his expression.

Respect.

"You're right," he said. "What do you want to know?"

Elena swallowed.

"Did my mother die?"

For the first time that evening, Dante hesitated.

"I don't know."

Caroline suddenly grabbed her purse.

Something metallic fell from the open zipper and struck the floor.

A small brass key.

Attached to it was a faded paper tag.

Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother's handwriting.

She bent down and picked it up.

Three words were written across the tag.

FOR ELENA ONLY.

"Where did you get this?" Elena demanded.

Caroline reached for it.

Dante caught her wrist before she could touch Elena.

"Don't."

Caroline began trembling.

Elena turned the tag over.

On the back was a date.

October 17, 2007.

The day her mother supposedly abandoned her.

And beneath the date was an address.

An address Elena knew by heart.

It belonged to the childhood home where Aunt Caroline had told her that Sophia's belongings had all been destroyed.

But the note contained one more sentence.

If Caroline says I'm gone, look beneath the stairs.

Elena slowly lifted her head.

Her aunt was crying.

May you like

Not because she was sorry.

Because someone had finally found the first piece of evidence.
