Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO CALLED HIMSELF A FATHER

Samuel Carter had spent almost thirty years believing Victor Langley was his father.

Victor had taught him to ride a bicycle.

Helped him with homework.

Attended school concerts.

And paid for his first apartment.

But he'd also concealed Samuel's birth records and helped keep him separated from his biological family.

Now Samuel lay in a hospital bed outside Boston, recovering from injuries sustained during an apparent unlawful confinement.

When Emily entered, she stopped.

The young man looked familiar.

Dark hair.

Blue eyes.

The same slightly crooked smile she'd seen in photographs of Laura.

He studied her.

"Emily?"

She nodded.

"Samuel?"

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he smiled shakily.

"Guess we're family."

Emily laughed through tears.

"Apparently."

She crossed the room.

They embraced.

Thirty years of separation couldn't be erased by one hug.

But it was a beginning.

Samuel explained that he'd discovered inconsistencies in the charitable trust records after reviewing documents connected to Bellmont House.

He confronted Victor.

Victor initially refused to answer.

Then admitted Richard Harrison had arranged the old adoption.

Samuel threatened to contact investigators.

Days later, he was intercepted while traveling to Boston.

He woke inside a private residence, unable to leave.

He believed people connected to Richard were responsible.

"Did Victor order it?" Emily asked.

Samuel looked down.

"I don't know."

"Then why did you tell the police he arranged it?"

"Because Victor was the person who told me to take that trip."

Emily's chest tightened.

Victor had sent Samuel directly into danger.

Whether knowingly or not remained to be established.

Daniel arrived later with Margaret.

For several seconds, the millionaire stood in the doorway.

Samuel looked toward him.

"Daniel Harrison."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Apparently, I'm your brother too."

Samuel laughed nervously.

"That's going to take some getting used to."

Then Margaret approached.

Her hands trembled.

"Anna is alive," she signed.

Samuel looked confused.

Emily interpreted.

"She's telling you about Daniel's sister."

Margaret turned toward Emily.

Then signed something that made her pause.

"Samuel, I knew your mother."

He watched her carefully.

Margaret continued.

"Laura loved you."

Samuel's eyes filled.

"She did?"

Emily took his hand.

"She still does."

Samuel began crying.

He had spent his life believing his biological mother gave him away.

Now he knew she'd fought for him.

For years.

The reunion with Laura took place the following week.

It was quiet.

Private.

Full of tears.

Laura touched Samuel's face as though memorizing every feature.

"My boy."

He hugged her.

And Emily watched a family begin to repair something no amount of money could replace.

But Samuel had brought one final piece of evidence.

A silver swallow pendant.

The matching half of Emily's necklace.

When the two pendants were placed together, tiny engraved numbers aligned.

A sequence.

A reference code.

Emily stared.

"What does it open?"

Samuel smiled faintly.

"A secured records cabinet."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Where?"

Samuel looked directly at him.

"In the original Harrison Global headquarters."

May you like

Then he whispered the detail that made everyone freeze.

"And inside that cabinet is a signed confession from Richard Harrison."
