Chapter 10 - THE TWENTY-THREE CHILDREN

Twenty-three children.
Twenty-three names.
Twenty-three lives shaped by documents they never knew existed.
Laura Carter had spent seventeen years trying to expose a network of fraudulent guardianship arrangements connected to Harrison Children's Trust.
She wasn't claiming every adoption had been unlawful.
But the records described cases in which parents were misled, identities were altered, or financial rights were concealed.
Some children had been placed with loving families.
Others had grown up believing their biological relatives had abandoned them.
And many had never received the money intended for their education and care.
Emily sat beside her mother, trying to understand.
"Why would Richard do this?"
Laura looked exhausted.
"Money."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
His father had built an empire celebrated in business magazines.
Now that empire's oldest records appeared to contain transactions that had harmed vulnerable families.
Laura continued.
"The trusts held valuable investments. If someone controlled the children's legal records, they could sometimes manipulate who received distributions."
Emily's stomach tightened.
"Did Richard control all of it?"
"No. He used lawyers, administrators, and intermediaries."
Margaret signed sharply.
"And he used my name."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Margaret's eyes filled.
"Some charitable accounts were established in my name."
Daniel stared.
"But you never approved the transfers?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I trusted your father to manage the financial paperwork."
The admission broke something inside Daniel.
For years, he'd believed his mother's deafness had made her dependent on his father.
Now he realized Richard had exploited other people's tendency to underestimate her.
Emily took Margaret's hand.
"You weren't foolish."
Margaret looked at her.
Emily signed carefully.
"You trusted your husband. He was responsible for being honest."
Margaret began crying.
Laura smiled sadly.
"That's exactly what I told her twenty years ago."
For the first time, the women shared a small moment of laughter.
Then Daniel asked, "Where are the original records?"
Laura looked toward Emily's necklace.
"The swallow."
Emily frowned.
"Grandma said it was a family keepsake."
"It is."
Laura continued.
"But it was also a symbol used by the women who tried to protect the children."
Emily leaned forward.
"Women?"
"Ruth. Margaret. Me. And several nurses who became suspicious."
Margaret nodded.
Laura took a breath.
"We made copies of the records and hid them in separate places."
"Where?"
Laura looked toward Daniel.
"Some were placed in your family's old charitable archive."
Daniel nodded.
"We found part of that."
"But the original beneficiary list wasn't there."
Emily felt her pulse quicken.
"Where is it?"
Laura gently touched her pendant.
"The second swallow."
Emily stared.
"You said there were two."
Laura nodded.
"One went to you."
"And the other?"
Laura's expression changed.
"I gave it to Samuel before they took him."
Emily stopped breathing.
Her brother.
Samuel Carter.
The man missing for six weeks.
He had the other swallow.
Then Laura whispered the detail that made the entire room fall silent.
"Samuel came to see me last month."
Emily stared.
"What?"
"He told me he'd finally found the place Richard hid the stolen money."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Where?"
May you like
Laura took a shaky breath.
"Inside Harrison Global itself."
