Chapter 9 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO ALESSANDRA

Alessandra did not overdose.

The toxicology report had been altered.

Daniel proved it.

The original report was hidden inside Harborlight’s files.

Alessandra had sedatives in her blood.

But the concentration was consistent with prescribed sleep medication.

Cause of death:

Head trauma.

Not overdose.

Adrien read the page twice.

“Who changed it?”

Daniel’s notes named Dr. Victor Dane.

Dead six years.

Paid by Carlo.

More records connected Voss.

Then one witness remained.

Nicholas Caruso.

Alive.

Daniel had been trying to find him.

Clara looked at the coded notebook.

“There’s another entry.”

BLUE BOAT — 8/11 — 77.

Salvatore recognized that too.

Nicholas loved sailing.

Owned a blue sailboat before marrying Alessandra.

The number 77 corresponded to a marina slip north of Chicago.

The boat itself was long gone.

But the marina records showed a storage unit still paid annually in cash.

Unit 77.

Inside:

Nicholas Caruso’s clothes.

Passports.

Medical records.

And dozens of letters to Evelyn.

Unsent.

The newest dated three months earlier.

Adrien felt rage.

“He knows she’s alive.”

Clara replied:

“Maybe he can’t reach her.”

Another envelope contained Daniel’s handwriting.

N.C. moved again after Voss found him. Safe contact through Father Michael.

A priest.

St. Vincent’s parish.

Father Michael recognized Nicholas immediately when Adrien showed the photograph.

“He comes every Tuesday.”

Adrien stared.

“Where is he now?”

The priest’s expression changed.

“He missed this week.”

Then:

“Daniel came looking for him last month.”

Clara stepped forward.

“My husband was here?”

“Yes.”

“Where did they go?”

“I don’t know.”

But Nicholas had left something with the priest.

A confession.

Not religious.

Legal.

Video.

They watched in the rectory.

Nicholas appeared older.

Scar along his temple.

Voice shaking.

“Alessandra discovered Carlo was stealing from Harborlight.”

He swallowed.

“She threatened to take Evelyn and go to Adrien.”

Adrien closed his eyes.

His sister had planned to trust him.

Eventually.

“Carlo intercepted her.”

Nicholas continued.

“They argued at the lake house.”

“Carlo shoved her.”

Adrien’s fists tightened.

“She fell.”

Clara whispered:

“Accident?”

Nicholas shook his head in the video.

“She was alive.”

Adrien stopped breathing.

Carlo could have called for help.

Instead, he called Voss.

They staged the overdose.

Nicholas tried to intervene.

Carlo’s men beat him.

Told him Evelyn would die if he spoke.

They hid the girl.

Nicholas ran because he believed staying visible endangered her.

Then he said:

“I was a coward.”

Adrien watched silently.

“Daniel Harper found me three years ago.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“He convinced me Evelyn deserved truth more than I deserved safety.”

The video ended with coordinates.

A cabin near the Wisconsin border.

They drove there immediately.

Empty.

Fresh food.

Two cups.

One broken chair.

A struggle.

Then Clara found blood on the floor.

Not much.

Enough.

Adrien’s phone rang.

Unknown.

He answered.

Carlo’s voice.

“Nephew.”

Adrien went completely still.

“Where are they?”

Carlo laughed.

“So you found Nicholas.”

“And Daniel?”

A pause.

Then:

“You should have left the maid downstairs.”

Adrien’s gaze moved toward Clara.

Carlo continued:

“Now bring me the Harborlight records.”

“Or?”

“You lose the husband she’s been mourning.”

Clara stopped breathing.

May you like

Daniel Harper was alive.

And Carlo had him.
