Chapter 11 - THE CHILD IN CARLO’S ARMS

Carlo reached for Mia.

The guard hesitated.

That hesitation saved everyone.

Mia bit his hand.

Hard.

He shouted and loosened his grip.

She dropped to the floor and ran.

Straight toward Adrien.

Carlo yelled:

“Get her!”

A man moved.

Adrien stepped between them.

The man charged.

Adrien caught him, turned his momentum, and sent him hard against a stack of empty crates.

Controlled.

No weapon.

The man went down.

Then another guard rushed from the side.

Adrien blocked the strike and drove him to the floor with one sharp movement.

Second threat stopped.

Luca’s teams moved from outside.

Police followed.

Carlo reached inside his coat.

Clara screamed:

“Adrien!”

Adrien pushed Mia behind him.

But Carlo did not draw a gun.

He pulled out a remote.

Red button.

Nicholas’s face changed.

“Bomb.”

Everyone froze.

Carlo smiled.

“Records first.”

Adrien looked around.

Wiring?

Possible.

Bluff?

Impossible to know.

Clara crouched beside Mia.

Daniel shouted:

“Clara, get her out!”

Carlo lifted the remote.

“One press.”

Adrien did something no Moretti man in Carlo’s generation would have understood.

He lowered his hands.

Not surrender.

De-escalation.

“You win.”

Carlo blinked.

Adrien slid the case forward.

“Take it.”

Luca stared from cover.

Clara understood.

Adrien no longer cared about looking weak.

Only Mia.

Carlo opened the case.

Records.

He laughed.

Then Daniel said:

“Wrong originals.”

Carlo’s head snapped toward him.

Daniel smiled despite his bruised face.

“You spent four years chasing paper.”

Carlo’s rage flashed.

“That’s all you ever understood.”

Daniel continued:

“Harborlight’s real evidence isn’t paper anymore.”

“What?”

“Cloud servers.”

Carlo looked confused.

Daniel laughed.

“I’m an accountant, not a museum curator.”

The distraction lasted two seconds.

Enough.

A police marksman fired at the remote.

Not Carlo.

The device shattered from his hand.

Officers moved.

Carlo fought.

Even at seventy.

Adrien did not.

He stepped back.

Let them take him alive.

Bomb squad later found no explosives.

The remote controlled nothing.

Pure fear.

Carlo’s final weapon.

And it almost worked because everyone knew what he was capable of.

Clara dropped beside Daniel as officers cut the restraints.

For several seconds, husband and wife stared.

Four years.

A child he had never held.

A life Clara built without him.

Daniel reached toward her.

Stopped.

“Can I?”

Clara started crying.

Then nodded.

He hugged her.

Not romantic.

Desperate.

Apologetic.

Then Mia peeked around Adrien’s leg.

“Mommy?”

Clara released Daniel.

She took Mia’s hand.

“Mia.”

Her voice shook.

“This is Daniel.”

The little girl stared.

Daniel’s entire face broke.

Clara continued:

“He’s your daddy.”

Mia frowned.

“My daddy is dead.”

Every adult went silent.

Daniel started crying.

“I know.”

Mia looked at Adrien.

Then back at Daniel.

“Are you a zombie?”

Daniel laughed through tears.

“Maybe.”

She considered that acceptable.

Then walked forward and touched his face.

Clara cried harder.

Adrien turned away.

Some reunions were not his to watch.

Then Luca approached.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We found the security leak.”

Adrien looked over.

“Who?”

Luca’s face looked sick.

“Salvatore.”

Adrien stopped.

The old butler who protected Evelyn.

May you like

The man who served the family forty years.

Salvatore had given Carlo the safe-house address.
