Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO KNEW MY REAL NAME

Silas Crane had known I was Claire Mercer before Dominic ever learned my name.
That realization made every memory from the past six months feel different.
The stranger who followed me after my night shifts.
The black sedan parked near my apartment.
The manager who suddenly offered me a job at Aurelia despite my incomplete employment history.
I'd thought I was lucky.
Now I wondered whether someone had arranged my entire life.
Dominic's attorney, Evelyn Shaw, examined the employment records.
My manager had received a recommendation from an executive staffing agency.
The agency was connected to Northbridge Holdings.
Silas's company.
My stomach tightened.
"He placed me in that restaurant."
Dominic studied the report.
"It appears that way."
"Why?"
Evelyn answered carefully.
"Possibly because he knew Elena had left evidence with your father."
I looked down.
For five years, I'd been hiding under a false name.
And the man who threatened Audrey had been watching me anyway.
That evening, I returned to my apartment with an independent security escort arranged through my attorney.
I found the wooden box beneath my bed.
It was small.
Dark brown.
The corners were scratched.
On its lid, Dad had carved a tiny star.
He used to call me his North Star.
I sat on the floor and opened it.
Inside lay a photograph.
A silver bracelet.
And a sealed envelope.
The envelope was addressed to me.
My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter.
My beautiful Claire,
If you're reading this, then the people I tried to protect you from have found you.
Tears blurred my vision.
Dad continued.
Elena Vale was my friend. She trusted me with evidence that could expose the people stealing from her daughter's inheritance.
I swallowed.
But the money isn't the only secret.
I stopped breathing.
There is another child involved.
I stared at the words.
Another child?
Then I read the next paragraph.
Years ago, the Mercer family helped establish a charitable trust for children injured or orphaned by violence connected to criminal organizations.
My heart tightened.
That trust included money meant to provide medical care, education, and long-term support.
Then Dad wrote:
Silas Crane has been stealing from that fund for years.
I closed my eyes.
Audrey's inheritance wasn't the only source.
Other children had been robbed too.
I kept reading.
Elena discovered the fraud. She planned to expose it. When Silas learned what she knew, he threatened everyone helping her.
The final paragraph made my hands shake.
Claire, you must understand something.
My breath caught.
The Vale bombing wasn't intended only to kill Elena.
It was meant to eliminate the person who controlled the original Mercer trust records.
I stared at the final sentence.
That person was me.
My heart stopped.
Then I unfolded the photograph.
It showed Dad standing beside Elena.
Between them was a little girl with dark hair.
Audrey.
And on the back, Dad had written:
IF THEY FIND ME, PROTECT HER.
I covered my mouth.
But the box contained one more secret.
The silver bracelet was engraved with a name.
Not mine.
Not Audrey's.
MERCER.
Beneath it was a date.
The date of the bombing.
May you like
And inside the bracelet was a tiny storage device.
Dad had hidden the second ledger where nobody would think to look.
