Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE BOMBING

Dominic Vale had spent three years searching for the people who killed his wife.

He'd blamed rival organizations.

Questioned enemies.

And built walls around his daughter because he believed the entire world wanted to hurt her.

Now the evidence pointed toward the two men closest to him.

Silas Crane.

Victor Vale.

His trusted adviser.

His younger brother.

I watched Dominic sitting alone in his study.

An old photograph rested in his hands.

Elena stood beside him on their wedding day.

She was laughing.

He looked younger.

Less tired.

Almost peaceful.

"She tried to tell me," he whispered.

I remained near the doorway.

"About Silas?"

He nodded.

"She said the financial reports didn't make sense."

"What did you do?"

His expression broke.

"I told her Silas was loyal."

Silence.

Then he looked toward me.

"I said she was worrying about nothing."

I didn't know what to say.

He continued.

"She died believing I wouldn't listen."

I sat across from him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then I said quietly:

"Dominic, you can't change what happened."

His eyes filled.

"But you can decide what happens next."

He looked down.

"I know."

For the first time, I saw him without the reputation.

Without the expensive suit.

Without the men who stood outside every door.

He was simply a widower trying to understand how he failed the woman he loved.

Then he looked toward the hallway.

"Audrey."

I nodded.

"She needs you."

He swallowed.

"I don't know how to help her."

"Then learn."

He gave a sad smile.

"You're very direct."

"Your daughter deserves direct."

He nodded.

"You're right."

Over the following days, Dominic began studying American Sign Language with a qualified Deaf instructor.

He practiced every morning.

His hands were stiff.

His grammar was terrible.

And he regularly confused signs that made Audrey burst into silent laughter.

But he kept trying.

One afternoon, I watched him sign:

I love you.

Audrey stared.

Then signed back:

I love you too, Daddy.

Dominic began crying.

He didn't hide it.

For the first time in three years, father and daughter were speaking directly to each other.

Meanwhile, investigators examined the recovered financial records, travel documents, and security footage.

Evidence suggested the bombing had been planned by people connected to Silas and Victor.

But the case required careful investigation.

Statements needed verification.

Transactions required authentication.

And the physical evidence had to be examined by specialists.

Then an unexpected development changed everything.

A former security contractor contacted the authorities.

He claimed he'd been hired to move equipment on the day of the bombing.

He didn't know the intended target.

But he remembered delivering a red box to Victor Vale.

And he'd kept a copy of the delivery receipt.

The signature belonged to Victor.

Then the contractor revealed one final detail.

The box wasn't originally intended for Elena's car.

It was meant to be placed inside Dominic's office.

The bombing hadn't been designed to kill Elena alone.

The original target was Dominic Vale.

And Elena died because she discovered the plan and tried to stop it.
