Chapter 9 - THE MUSIC BOX THAT HELD A CONFESSION

The music box had disappeared from Mom's study.
But Eleanor remembered how to open a compartment nobody else knew existed.
Now we needed to find it before Victor did.
Detective Morgan traced the inventory from the study.
The box had been transferred to a private storage company.
The company belonged to a holding group connected to Victor.
A court-authorized search recovered several items from the facility.
Among them was a walnut music box with brass corners.
My mother's music box.
When Detective Morgan showed us the photograph, Finn began crying.
“I remember that.”
His voice trembled.
“Mom used to play it when I couldn't sleep.”
Julian covered his mouth.
Eleanor placed a hand on Finn's shoulder.
“We found it.”
The box was preserved as evidence.
Investigators carefully examined its mechanism.
Beneath the ballerina was a small panel.
Exactly where Eleanor remembered.
Inside were two objects.
A flash drive.
And a folded letter.
The letter was addressed to us.
MY FOUR BOYS.
I stopped breathing.
Mom's handwriting.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Dad looked as though he might collapse.
The investigator provided a copy after documenting it.
Adrian read aloud.
My beautiful boys,
If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.
His voice cracked.
He stopped.
Theo took the page.
I want you to know that none of this is your fault.
My eyes filled.
Sometimes adults make terrible decisions because they're afraid of losing power.
Sometimes they forget that the people they should protect matter more than the things they own.
Theo swallowed.
Then continued.
Your father is not perfect.
Neither am I.
But I hope you never confuse love with fear.
I covered my face.
For six years, I'd carried anger like armor.
Now Mom was reaching through time to tell us something we'd needed to hear every day.
Then Theo read the final paragraph.
Adrian, you don't have to be the man of the house.
Theo, your laughter is not a crime.
Mason, your anger doesn't make you unlovable.
Finn, you deserve to feel safe.
All four of us were crying.
Then came the last sentence.
And if Eleanor Emily Hargrove ever returns to this house, please remember that she belongs to our family too.
Eleanor began sobbing.
Julian covered his face.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then investigators reviewed the flash drive.
It contained financial records, internal communications, and a video message.
The video showed Mom sitting inside her study.
She looked frightened.
But determined.
“My name is Caroline Cavanaugh,” she said.
“And I'm recording this because I believe Victor Sloane is stealing from my husband's companies.”
My heart hammered.
Then Mom continued.
“He has threatened employees who questioned the accounts.”
She paused.
“And I believe he's trying to make Julian appear responsible for everything.”
The video flickered.

Then she whispered the words that made Dad collapse into his chair.
“If I die, please don't let Victor convince my husband that protecting our sons means hiding the truth.”
