Chapter 12 - THE LEDGER HIDDEN UNDER THE GREENHOUSE

The last place my mother expected us to find a financial conspiracy was the greenhouse where she taught us to grow tomatoes.

And yet that was exactly where the investigation led.

Detective Morgan obtained the necessary authorization to examine the sealed maintenance passage.

The entrance stood behind a row of empty planters.

A steel door had been installed recently.

Fresh bolts.

New paint.

No explanation in the estate maintenance records.

I watched from the garden beside my brothers.

Finn stood between Eleanor and Dad.

He looked nervous.

I squeezed his shoulder.

“You okay?”

He nodded.

Then whispered, “Mom used to call this the dragon tunnel.”

I smiled sadly.

“I remember.”

Adrian looked toward us.

“She made us crawl through it looking for plastic treasure coins.”

Theo laughed softly.

“You cried because you thought the dragon was real.”

Adrian glared.

“I was nine.”

For the first time in weeks, we all laughed.

Then the investigators emerged.

They had found a locked document case inside a wall cavity.

The case contained a handwritten ledger, original contracts, and several storage drives.

The records appeared to support Caroline and Thomas's concerns about diverted charitable funds and unauthorized transactions.

But there was something else.

A letter addressed to Julian.

Dad read it privately with his attorney.

When he returned, his face was pale.

“What did it say?” Adrian asked.

Julian looked toward us.

“Your mother knew Victor was manipulating me.”

Theo folded his arms.

“That's not exactly surprising.”

Dad nodded.

“But she also knew I was afraid of losing the company.”

His voice cracked.

“She tried to tell me our family mattered more.”

I looked down.

Then he continued.

“She wrote that if I couldn't make that choice myself, she'd make it for us.”

My stomach tightened.

“What choice?”

Dad hesitated.

“She was preparing to separate our family's legitimate assets from the businesses involved in illegal activity.”

Adrian looked stunned.

“Without telling you?”

Julian nodded.

“She believed I would try to stop her.”

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor asked quietly.

“Did she have the authority?”

Rebecca answered.

“The documents suggest she had independent control over certain trust assets. Legal review will determine their enforceability.”

Dad looked toward the greenhouse.

“She was braver than I was.”

I swallowed.

For years, I'd believed Mom was simply the person who made our house feel warm.

Now I understood she had also been trying to protect people our family had harmed.

Then Detective Morgan called.

Victor Sloane had been located.

He was attempting to leave the country using travel documents associated with a different identity.

Authorities detained him for questioning.

The news should have brought relief.

Instead, it brought another surprise.

Investigators recovered his communications with Tyler Mercer.

They showed that Tyler had been paid to provoke the fight outside my school.

But one message contained a detail nobody expected.

Tyler had asked why Victor wanted Mason Cavanaugh arrested.

Victor replied:

BECAUSE MASON SAW CAROLINE'S LAST MEETING.

I stared.

My heart stopped.

Mom died when I was eleven.

May you like

I'd never told anyone about her final meeting.

Because until that moment, I hadn't remembered it.
