Chapter 5 - THE PERFECT MAN WAS ALMOST BROKE

Miles Harper had excellent teeth, excellent manners, and almost no money.

Not real money.

Not liquid money.

Not enough to save Harper Hospitality from collapsing under hidden debt.

The polished family empire was a shell balanced on loans.

Nora stared at him.

“You were going to marry me because of Bennett Events?”

Miles’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not fair.”

I almost laughed.

Fair.

The favorite word of men caught doing something ugly.

He looked toward her mother.

“Diane understood the arrangement.”

Nora turned.

“Mom?”

Diane began crying.

That surprised everyone.

“I was trying to protect the company.”

“By giving him my money?”

“By building a stronger partnership.”

“You knew his company was failing?”

Diane looked down.

That was answer enough.

Nora stepped backward.

Then her voice broke.

“You were willing to marry me off to fix a balance sheet.”

“No!”

Diane stood.

“I thought you liked Miles.”

“I tolerate Miles.”

Eleanor muttered:

“Generous.”

Nora ignored her.

Diane continued.

“He’s stable. Educated. Successful.”

“No, he’s not!”

Miles slammed his palm against the table.

“Enough.”

The room froze.

His polite mask cracked.

For one second, I saw the man underneath.

Nora saw him too.

Then Miles took a breath and forced the smile back.

“I apologize.”

I looked toward Nora.

“You still want me here?”

She glanced at me.

Despite everything, she nodded.

“Yes.”

That single word meant more than the thousand dollars.

The family lunch ended early.

Guests disappeared.

Relatives whispered.

Diane locked herself in her office.

Nora sat on the back terrace with Eleanor.

I stayed far enough away to give them privacy.

Then Eleanor approached me.

“You like her.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“I met her this morning.”

“That wasn’t a denial.”

I looked toward Nora.

“She’s brave.”

Eleanor smiled.

“She’s terrified.”

“Same thing sometimes.”

The older woman studied me.

Then said:

“If you truly want to help her, find out why Miles wants the bakery property.”

I frowned.

“What bakery property?”

Eleanor looked surprised.

“Nora didn’t tell you?”

“No.”

“She signed a lease last month.”

I stared.

“Where?”

“King Street. Old Bennett warehouse.”

My pulse changed.

I knew the building.

Everyone in Charleston real estate did.

Prime corner lot.

Historic zoning.

Worth several million.

And recently, my own development company had received an anonymous offer to purchase the adjacent block.

I looked toward Eleanor.

“Who owns the warehouse?”

“Technically? The Bennett family trust.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who controls the trust?”

She smiled without humor.

“Diane.”

I understood.

Miles didn’t only want Nora.

He wanted the property.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from my real estate director.

Boss, someone filed an emergency zoning application on the Bennett warehouse.

I opened the attached document.

Proposed use:

HARPER LUXURY HOTEL DEVELOPMENT.

Applicant signature:

NORA BENNETT.

I stared.

Another forged signature.

This time, someone wasn't merely stealing her savings.

They were trying to steal the bakery before she ever opened it.
