Chapter 10 - THE SISTER WHO WAS ERASED FROM THE FAMILY

Lily Bennett was born three years before Nora.
Then disappeared from every family photograph.
Every conversation.
Every legal record Nora knew.
Eleanor sat in the warehouse while Nora read her father’s letter.
My girls,
If you're reading this, then Richard Harper found a way back into our family.
Nora’s hands trembled.
Lily was born with a different last name because your mother and I were not yet married.
Diane began crying.
Nora looked toward her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
Diane covered her mouth.
Eleanor answered:
“Alive.”
Nora staggered backward.
Her parents had placed Lily with Diane’s older cousin temporarily when James became involved with Harper’s smuggling operation.
It was supposed to protect her.
Then threats escalated.
The arrangement became permanent.
Lily grew up under the name Lily Graham.
Nora stared at her mother.
“You let me grow up without knowing my sister.”
Diane sobbed.
“We thought it was safer.”
“Stop saying safe!”
Her voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Safe is not the same as hidden.”
Nobody answered.
Then I realized something.
“Where is Lily now?”
Eleanor looked toward me.
“Savannah.”
“What does she do?”
A pause.
Then:
“She owns a bakery.”
Nora stopped breathing.
Of course.
The irony hurt.
For eighteen months, Nora had secretly dreamed of becoming a baker.
Her sister had already built the life she wanted.
Then Nora’s attorney found another detail in James’s records.
Richard Harper had discovered Lily’s identity two months earlier.
Miles had visited Savannah three times.
Nora went pale.
“Why?”
Nobody knew.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A woman spoke.
“Nora Bennett?”
Nora’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“My name is Lily Graham.”
The room went still.
Nora covered her mouth.
Lily continued:
“I think I'm your sister.”
Nora started crying.
“Yes.”
Then Lily whispered:
“Miles Harper came to see me.”
My jaw tightened.
“What did he want?” Nora asked.
“He offered to buy my bakery.”
Nora stared.
“Why?”
“I didn't understand at first.”
A pause.
“Then I found out the building sits on land tied to an old Bennett trust.”
Nora looked toward Eleanor.
Her grandmother closed her eyes.
Lily continued:
“Nora, our father didn't only leave evidence.”
“What else?”
“He left property.”
My pulse changed.
Then Lily said:
“And Miles needs both our signatures to control it.”
Nora swallowed.
“What property?”
A long silence.
Then Lily answered:
“Half the waterfront block beside Evan Cole’s docks.”
I went completely still.
May you like
The missing Bennett trust wasn't only connected to Nora’s bakery.
It controlled the exact land Harper Hospitality had spent two years trying to acquire from me.
