Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED

Julian stared at Elena.

“My mother is dead.”

“That is what the records say.”

“But?”

Elena placed an old passport on the table.

The photograph showed Julian's mother.

The name was different.

But the face was unmistakable.

“She survived.”

Arthur sank into a chair.

“No…”

Richard laughed.

“She was smarter than all of us.”

Julian felt dizzy.

“My mother is alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Elena hesitated.

“Mexico.”

Dominic whispered:

“Why would she disappear?”

Arthur answered.

“To protect you.”

But Richard interrupted.

“To protect herself.”

He explained that Julian's mother had discovered the entire criminal network.

She staged her death.

She disappeared.

Then she spent years collecting evidence.

She had secretly communicated with Dominic.

She had even helped protect Noah.

Julian couldn't process it.

“Why didn't she contact me?”

“Because Richard was watching you.”

Then another message arrived.

A single photograph.

Julian opened it.

His mother was standing outside a small church.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably his mother.

Under the photograph was a message:

I am sorry. I should have come home sooner.

Julian's hands trembled.

“She's coming back.”

Elena nodded.

“She wants to testify.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“No.”

Federal agents immediately moved toward him.

Richard suddenly grabbed a guard's weapon.

But before he could raise it, Dominic stepped between him and Julian.

Richard froze.

“You won't shoot.”

Dominic looked at him.

“You're right.”

She pointed toward the security cameras.

“But everyone just saw what you were about to do.”

Richard slowly lowered the weapon.

Agents arrested him.

For the first time, the family conspiracy began collapsing.

But Julian wasn't finished.

He looked at Dominic.

“You said you loved me.”

“I did.”

“Did you ever?”

“Yes.”

“Even when you were lying?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

Julian looked toward Noah.

The baby had stopped crying.

He reached down.

Then gently touched Noah's tiny hand.

“I don't know what happens to us.”

Dominic nodded.

“I understand.”

“But I know what happens to him.”

He looked at Gabriella.

“He stays safe.”

And then the front door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Julian stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

She whispered:

May you like

“I'm home.”
