Chapter 8 - VAULT 814

Grand National Terminal had been abandoned for seven years.
From the street, it looked like another forgotten commercial building waiting for redevelopment.
Inside, it felt like history had been locked away and left to rot.
Dominic brought only two trusted men.
Mom stayed in Ohio under protection.
I should have stayed too.
I didn’t.
Vault 814 sat behind an old records room beneath the building.
The brass key fit.
Inside was a black metal case.
Dominic stared at it for several seconds before opening it.
There were no stacks of cash.
No weapons.
Only documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And a small digital recorder.
The first folder contained copies of the Kessler documents.
The second contained payments from Vale-controlled companies to Russo shell corporations.
The third was worse.
Matteo had been investigating Charles Vale.
And Victoria.
Her name appeared repeatedly.
Before marrying Dominic, Victoria had quietly served as an officer in two offshore companies connected to her father.
Companies that received money every time Russo Maritime acquired assets based on the altered translation.
“This was happening before we married,” Dominic said.
I looked at him.
“She didn’t marry into your empire.”
His face darkened.
“She married into the fraud.”
We played the recorder.
Matteo’s voice filled the room.
“Dominic, if you’re hearing this, I didn’t make it.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
Matteo explained that he had discovered someone inside the family was moving money through Vale companies.
He believed their father knew part of it.
But not all of it.
Then Matteo said:
“Victoria knows where Charles keeps the full ledger.”
Dominic looked at me.
The recording continued.
“I confronted her tonight. She told me I was digging into things that existed before either of us were born.”
A pause.
Then:
“She also knew about Mary Miller.”
My stomach dropped.
Matteo’s final words were quieter.
“If anything happens to me, it wasn’t the Russians, it wasn’t the unions, and it wasn’t some street war.”
Another pause.
“It came from inside our house.”
The recording ended.
Dominic remained motionless.
Then his phone vibrated.
A security alert.
Someone had entered Mary’s hospital records account.
Not to steal money.

To access her appointment schedule.
The login came from a Vale family office computer.
