Chapter 13 - BENEATH THE LION

The Russo townhouse had been empty since Enzo died.
Victoria inherited it through a family trust after marrying Dominic.
She rarely used it.
Now we knew why.
In Enzo’s old library, a carved stone lion faced west.
Dominic stared at it.
“My father always kept it pointed toward the windows.”
I remembered Mom’s sentence.
“When the lion faces east…”
Together, we rotated the sculpture.
A small metal click sounded beneath the pedestal.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a ledger.
Not copies.
Not summaries.
The original.
Charles Vale’s private payment record.
Every altered translation.
Every shell company.
Every payoff.
Every transfer.
Twenty-seven years of fraud.
Dominic turned pages silently.
Then he reached the final section.
Enzo Russo’s name appeared several times.
His father had accepted the fraudulent ownership structure.
He had profited.
He had paid people to remain silent.
The truth was ugly.
But Dominic did not close the book.
He photographed every page.
Then handed the ledger to federal investigators.
“You understand what this could do to your family?” one agent asked.
“Yes.”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
“And you still want it entered into evidence?”
Dominic looked at the stone lion.
“My brother died because everyone in my family kept choosing the name over the truth.”
Then he released the ledger.
Victoria was arrested the next morning on financial charges connected to the forged filings and attempted asset transfer.
Charles was detained hours later.
The investigation into Matteo’s death reopened.
But one final problem remained.
The Kessler assets.
If the original translation was legally recognized, portions of Russo Maritime did not belong entirely to the Russo family.
They belonged to a trust.
A trust whose beneficiaries had never received what was promised.
Dominic’s attorneys estimated the liability could destroy the company.
He listened.
Then asked one question.
“How much belongs to them?”
The room went quiet.
His attorney answered:
“Possibly more than half.”
Dominic nodded.
“Then half was never ours.”
I stared at him.
He turned toward me.
“Help me find the beneficiaries.”
That request shocked me.
But the next one shocked me more.
“And after we fix this, Casey…”
May you like
He placed my mother’s original page on the table.
“I want you to testify against my family.”
