Chapter 12 - The Guardian in the Rain

The autumn downpour slicked the asphalt outside the corner bookstore where Julian Sterling now worked the evening shift. Wearing a worn canvas jacket and holding an umbrella with a broken spoke, Julian stepped out into the biting wind to lock the iron gate.
As he turned the corner toward the subway, a sleek black sedan with tinted windows caught his attention. It was parked across from the Vance Global security perimeter, two blocks away.
Julian had spent his entire adult life surrounded by private security teams; he knew the subtle cues of surveillance. The driver wasn't an ordinary chauffeur. The man wore an earpiece, held a high-powered telephoto lens resting against the steering wheel, and had his sights locked directly onto the private elevator exit where Nora’s armored SUV was idling.

Julian watched in horror as a man in a courier uniform walked toward the executive entrance, carrying a floral package with a concealed electronic jamming device tucked beneath the ribbon.
Julian didn't hesitate. He dropped his umbrella and sprinted across the rain-drenched intersection.
“Security!” Julian yelled, tackling the disguised courier onto the wet concrete just as the man attempted to breach the lobby glass doors.
The floral package flew across the ground, shattering to reveal an illegal high-frequency signal scrambler designed to knock out the building’s surveillance network. Security guards swarmed out with drawn weapons, pinning the intruder to the pavement.

Julian scrambled to his feet, bleeding from a cut on his brow. Through the transparent glass of the private elevator lobby, Nora stepped out, flanked by Marcus and two armed guards.
Their eyes locked across the rain and chaos. Julian didn't step forward. He simply raised his hands, stepped back into the shadows of the alley, and let the storm swallow him whole.
