Chapter 11 - THE AGREEMENT WAS REAL, BUT NOT THE WAY MARK HOPED

We found Carolyn before sunrise.
Not through police.
Through a hotel reservation.
She had checked into the same hotel hosting our gala.
Three floors above us.
That told me everything about how confident she had been.
Sterling and I went together.
Diane insisted on coming.
Mark followed.
When Carolyn opened the door, she did not look surprised.
“You finally saw the photograph.”
Diane slapped her.
Nobody expected it.
Especially Carolyn.
Diane’s hand shook afterward.
“You used Henry.”
Carolyn touched her cheek.
“Henry used himself.”
I stepped forward.
“Is Appendix Nine real?”
“Yes.”
“Did I sign it?”
“No.”
Relief.
Then:
“Your grandmother did.”
Carolyn invited us inside.
She explained that Appendix Nine was not an equity conversion right for the Parker family.
It was a recovery mechanism.
Henry’s bridge financing came from a client fund later discovered to contain misallocated capital.
Not stolen by Henry.
Hidden from him by a senior partner at his bank.
When Henry discovered it, he panicked.
If NovaStream repaid the loan publicly, regulators could trace the source and freeze the company’s early accounts.
My grandmother created Appendix Nine to hold any disputed proceeds in escrow if the original funding source was challenged.
“So Mark owns nothing?”
Carolyn almost smiled.
“Correct.”
Mark sat down.
I felt no satisfaction.
This was larger than him now.
“Why forge my signature?”
“I didn’t.”
“Who did?”
“Mason.”
She explained that Mason had obtained old signed research forms and used them to create a false conversion page.
The real Appendix Nine protected NovaStream.
The fake one threatened it.
“Why help him?”
Diane demanded.
Carolyn’s face hardened.
“Because your husband let everyone believe he saved NovaStream with his own money.”
“He never said that.”
“He never corrected it either.”
There it was.
Resentment.
Years old.
Feeding itself.
Carolyn had spent decades believing Henry died with his contribution erased.
Mason found that resentment and weaponized it.
Just like Jessica weaponized Mark’s pride.
Same strategy.
Different weakness.
Then Carolyn looked at me.
“Mason has the real Appendix Nine too.”
“How?”
“Because I gave it to him.”
Diane whispered, “Why?”
“To force the truth out.”
I stared at her.
“And what does the real document say that everyone is afraid of?”
Carolyn hesitated.
Then answered.
“It identifies the senior banker who contaminated Henry’s funding.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward Arthur Sterling.
My stomach dropped.
May you like
Carolyn said:
“Arthur’s father.”
