Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN HE CALLED BACKGROUND NOISE

The first thing Mark did after Arthur Sterling said, “You work for her,” was laugh.

It was not a real laugh.

It was the desperate sound of a man trying to force reality back into the shape he preferred.

“Elena doesn’t work here.”

Sterling looked at me.

“No,” he said. “She owns the controlling interest.”

The ballroom went silent enough for me to hear the tiny pieces of Mark’s shattered glass settling against the marble.

Jessica’s fingers froze around my grandmother’s necklace.

Mark stared at me.

“What is he talking about?”

I removed the white serving gloves he had insisted I wear.

Slowly.

Finger by finger.

“For years, you kept asking what I contributed.”

His mouth opened.

“So tonight seemed like a good time to answer.”

Sterling motioned toward the enormous LED wall behind the stage.

The NovaStream anniversary logo disappeared.

A corporate ownership chart replaced it.

At the top:

ELENA VALE — FOUNDER, PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, CHAIRWOMAN.

Whispers moved through the ballroom.

Mark stepped closer.

“This is some kind of joke.”

Sterling’s expression remained cold.

“You joined NovaStream after Mrs. Vale had already designed the recommendation architecture that built its first major valuation.”

I watched Mark process my maiden name.

Vale.

Not Elena Parker, the quiet wife he had spent years diminishing.

Elena Vale.

The name buried in NovaStream’s earliest patent filings.

His face changed.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then Jessica recovered first.

She lifted her chin.

“Even if that’s true, Mark earned his position.”

I looked at her.

“Did he?”

Mark went still.

Sterling opened a black folder.

“For the last eighteen months, the Board has been reviewing irregularities connected to Mr. Parker’s division.”

Mark’s arrogance disappeared.

“What irregularities?”

Sterling did not answer him.

He answered me.

“Madam Chairwoman, shall we proceed?”

Everyone waited.

I thought of every report I had secretly repaired.

Every mistake I had hidden.

Every promotion I had accidentally helped Mark believe he deserved.

Then I looked at the necklace around Jessica’s throat.

“Proceed.”

Sterling nodded.

And the first document that appeared on the screen was not about Mark’s affair.

It was about $14.6 million that had disappeared from NovaStream.
