Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION AT THE TABLE

Theodore survived.
Two days later, the entire family gathered at the estate.
No champagne.
No servants.
No lawyers.
Just the people who had lied to one another for decades.
Margaret spoke first.
“I should have told the truth.”
Amelia looked at her.
“Why didn't you?”
“Fear.”
“Fear of Samuel?”
“Yes.”
“And you let Celeste believe she was the heir?”
Margaret looked at her granddaughter.
“I wanted her to have something.”
Celeste wiped her eyes.
“You gave me a lie.”
“I know.”
Graham sat silently.
Amelia looked at him.
“And you?”
He met her eyes.
“I thought Celeste was my escape.”
“From what?”
“From a marriage I was too cowardly to repair.”
The honesty surprised her.
He continued.
“I wanted the company. I wanted freedom. I wanted to be admired.”
Amelia shook her head.
“And you thought humiliating me would make you happy?”
“No.”
“What did you think?”
“I thought you would simply leave.”
She smiled sadly.
“You never knew me.”
“No.”
He lowered his head.
“I didn't.”
Theodore watched them.
Then he placed the sapphire on the table.
“There's one final thing.”
He opened the hidden compartment.
Inside was a tiny strip of film.
Amelia stared.
“What is that?”
“The original proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“The night Margaret disappeared.”
They developed it.
The photograph showed Margaret standing beside Samuel.
But behind them stood another person.
Graham's father.
And in the corner was a young Theodore.
All four brothers were there.
Amelia looked closer.
Her mother's face appeared in the background.
She was holding a baby.
Amelia.
Theodore explained.
Her mother had secretly brought her to the Hale estate that night.
She had planned to confront the brothers.
Instead, Samuel attacked.
Graham's father betrayed Margaret.
Theodore tried to stop them.
The baby was taken away.
Amelia was hidden with another family.
The official story was created.
Margaret disappeared.
Samuel went underground.
And Theodore spent decades searching.
The photograph proved everything.
But there was one detail nobody had noticed.
A clock on the wall.
Its time read 11:47.
Theodore stared.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because the official police report says Margaret disappeared at 9:15.”
Amelia understood.
“The report was falsified.”
“Yes.”
Theodore looked at Samuel's confession.
“He wasn't just hiding the family.”
“He was rewriting history.”
Margaret began crying.
“I thought you were dead.”
Theodore looked at her.
“I thought you were.”
For the first time in decades, brother and sister embraced.
Amelia watched quietly.
The family had been broken for generations.
But now the truth was finally stronger than the lies.
Then Celeste stood.
“I need to tell you something.”
Everyone turned.
She looked at Amelia.
“The ring wasn't the only thing Samuel gave me.”
“What else?”
Celeste pulled a folded document from her purse.
“It was a list.”
“What kind of list?”
“People he paid.”
Amelia opened it.
Politicians.
Bankers.
Judges.
Developers.
And at the bottom...
May you like
a name she recognized.
Her own attorney.
