Chapter 7 - THE UNCLE IN THE SHADOWS

Emergency lights turned the vault red.

Amelia stood behind Theodore.

Graham moved toward her.

Samuel's voice echoed through the corridor.

“You have no idea what your family stole from me.”

Theodore shouted back.

“You stole from yourself.”

Samuel laughed.

“You always were the favorite.”

He stepped into view.

An elderly man in an immaculate black suit.

He looked remarkably calm.

Amelia stared at him.

“You're Samuel Hale.”

“Yes.”

“You've been alive all these years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dead men can watch everything.”

He looked at Margaret.

“You betrayed me.”

Margaret shook her head.

“You betrayed everyone.”

Samuel's eyes moved to Celeste.

“And you failed.”

Celeste began crying.

“I didn't know what you were planning.”

“You knew enough.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“You used everyone.”

Samuel smiled.

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because the Hale family was built on stolen money.”

He explained.

Decades earlier, Theodore and his brothers had discovered that their father had secretly diverted company assets.

Samuel believed he deserved the money.

Margaret disagreed.

Graham's father chose greed.

The family collapsed into betrayal.

But Samuel wanted more than money.

He wanted the Hale name.

He believed Theodore had stolen his position as patriarch.

So he manipulated generations.

He arranged disappearances.

Forged deaths.

Created false heirs.

And when Amelia was born, he ordered her erased from the family records.

“Why me?”

Samuel looked at her.

“Because your mother chose you.”

“What does that mean?”

“She chose you to inherit everything.”

Amelia stared.

“Why?”

“Because she believed you would break the cycle.”

Samuel stepped closer.

“You were never supposed to know.”

“Then why did you bring Celeste into this?”

“Because I needed someone who hated the Hales.”

Celeste looked devastated.

“I never wanted anyone killed.”

Samuel shrugged.

“People become casualties when they stand between power and revenge.”

Graham suddenly stepped forward.

“You used me.”

Samuel laughed.

“You were useful.”

Graham's face hardened.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

“You destroyed it yourself.”

Amelia looked at Graham.

He didn't defend himself.

For once, he accepted it.

Then Theodore whispered:

“Samuel.”

“What?”

“The ring.”

Samuel's eyes moved toward Celeste.

She had hidden it.

Samuel reached for his weapon.

But Celeste threw the sapphire toward Amelia.

“Catch!”

Amelia caught it.

Samuel fired.

Theodore pushed her aside.

The bullet struck the wall.

Security officers stormed the vault.

Samuel was tackled.

Margaret collapsed into a chair.

Celeste began sobbing.

Graham held pressure against Theodore's shoulder.

The old patriarch had been wounded.

But he was alive.

Amelia looked down at the sapphire.

For the first time, she understood what Theodore had meant.

The ring didn't prove an affair.

May you like

It proved who had betrayed whom.

And now the entire Hale family would have to face the truth.
