Chapter 8 - THE LITTLE GIRL SAVED MY LIFE WITHOUT KNOWING IT

The assassination plan depended on routine.
Tuesday through Friday, I slept in the locked office between noon and three.
Same temperature.
Same sofa.
Same guard rotation.
Same coffee delivered at 1:45.
Predictable men die predictably.
The Tuesday Lily entered my office, everything changed.
She opened the door.
Fantasma followed.
Allie rushed in.
Security logs recorded unexpected movement.
The coffee never arrived.
Because the tray had been stopped outside during the chaos.
We tested the coffee pot.
Digitalis.
Enough to cause cardiac arrest.
A natural-looking death for a thirty-eight-year-old man under extreme stress.
I stared at the report.
Lily’s blanket had not merely warmed me.
Her interruption had saved my life.
Allie sat beside her daughter in the kitchen.
When I told her, she covered her mouth.
Lily looked confused.
“Did I do something bad?”
“No.”
I crouched beside her.
“You did something very good.”
“What?”
“You made me miss my coffee.”
She frowned.
“That’s good?”
“Apparently.”
She considered this.
“Coffee smells yucky anyway.”
I smiled.
Actually smiled.
Allie saw.
For a second, the room changed.
Then I remembered poison.
Dominic.
Friday.
No softness allowed yet.
We created a false plan.
Friday would continue normally.
I would appear to sleep in the office.
Security would look unchanged.
Federal police were not an option.
Too many compromised contacts.
So I used one person Elena trusted.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Claire Bennett.
I found her name inside Elena’s files.
She had been working quietly on Moretti corruption for years.
She expected me to threaten her.
Instead, I handed over documents.
“You understand what this could do to your organization?”
“Yes.”
“Your freedom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I looked through the office window.
Lily was outside chasing Fantasma across the lawn.
“Because I’m tired of children paying for men’s secrets.”
Claire studied me.
Then nodded.
Friday arrived.
At 1:45 p.m., coffee came.
New server.
Not household staff.
We let him place it beside the sofa.
At 2:05, cameras showed Dominic entering through the service corridor.
At 2:09, another man joined him.
Masked.
At 2:13, they entered the office.
The sofa held a body-shaped form under Lily’s gray blanket.
Dominic approached.
Pulled the blanket away.
Empty.
Lights came on.
I stood behind him.
“Disappointed?”
He turned.
The masked man ran.
Agents moved.
Dominic drew.
I did not.
Claire’s people arrested him.
Alive.
He laughed as they cuffed him.
“You think this ends with me?”
“No.”
“I think you’re scared.”
He smiled.
“You should be.”
“Who gave the order?”
Dominic looked toward the doorway.
Allie stood there.
Behind her, Evan.
Dominic laughed harder.
Then said:
“Ask the maid who her father was.”
Allie froze.
“What?”
Dominic looked at me.
“You really never checked?”
I turned toward her.
Allie’s face had gone white.
“My father died when I was twelve.”
“What was his name?”
She whispered:
“Gabriel Carter.”
Claire Bennett stopped moving.
She knew the name.
Gabriel Carter had not been a schoolteacher as Allie believed.
May you like
He had been my father’s accountant.
The same man accused of betraying him before the warehouse fire.
